🏉 MATAK CLUB DAY – THIS SATURDAY! 🏉

This weekend is one of the biggest days on the Matakanui Rugby Club calendar as we celebrate Club Day!

The day kicks off with junior rugby from 10:00am through until around 12:30–12:45pm, with plenty of action, smiles, and future stars on display. It’s always a great chance to get down and support the young players who are the heart of our club.

For the Rangers, we’re looking forward to a big clash against the Falcons. The last time we met, they came away with a 3–1 victory in a tightly contested game, so we’re excited for another tough battle and the opportunity to put in a strong performance.

We’re also thrilled to welcome back a true club legend this weekend – BEN TUCKER!

The excitement around the club is huge, and we can’t wait to see the big man back out there doing his thing.

The day’s main event sees the Mudfish take on Cromwell, promising a cracking contest to cap off what should be a fantastic day for the club.

So bring the family, grab a spot on the sideline, and get along to support all our teams. Days like these are what community sport is all about.

💚❤️ Up the Rangers! Up the Mudfish! ❤️💚

Here’s a yarn from coach Karl

🌧️⚽ Sunday Football in Wanaka ⚽🌧️

On a wet Sunday morning in Wanaka, with the field splashing beneath their feet, our team took on a strong and physical Wanaka side.

The game was tough from the outset, with plenty of physicality and pushing that our kids weren’t overly keen on. Despite that, they showed real character, sticking together, supporting one another, and never backing down. A lot of the match was spent defending, but there were some fantastic moments where the team showed their determination, resilience, and teamwork.

🏆 Player of the Day: Henry H**e 🏆

Henry didn’t let the physical nature of the game bother him one bit. He made the midfield his own, reading the play brilliantly and intercepting countless passes. Every opportunity he got, he looked to drive the team forward and put pressure on the opposition.

Defensively, Henry was outstanding as well, throwing himself into challenges and making some superb sliding tackles to win possession back for his team. His work rate, courage, and commitment were on display from the first whistle to the last.

A well-deserved Player of the Day performance.

👏 Well played, Henry, and well done to all the kids for showing great heart, standing up for each other, and battling through the wet conditions. Plenty to be proud of today. 💙💛⚽🌧️

🌟 Player of the Day – Marley 🌟

Today's Player of the Day goes to Marley! Following in her big sister's footsteps, she's proving to be the next up-and-comer from the Eketone Girl Gang.

Marley impressed all day with her sharp turns, quick feet, and confident dribbling through and around opponents. She showed great vision with some excellent passes to her teammates and came close to scoring a couple of goals herself. Her hard work paid off when she set up the only goal scored for the day.

Marley played all three games with great energy and determination from start to finish. Keep up the fantastic work—we're looking forward to seeing you back out there again next week! ⚽👏💙

Our under 13s took on a older , taller girls team from Cromwell today, was a back and forward match up that ended in a 5-5 draw, the kids played really well against the much bigger opponent

This is what head coach Steve had to say today about the under 13 player of the day

Player of the day today was Oakley Hinton for tireless work in the midfield, solid defence, good linking up and comms with players all around him and a cool head under pressure. Well done Oakley!

This just in from coach Karl

Our U12/13 team took on Wanaka this week and it was awesome to see the kids put the game plan from training into action.

They started fast and grabbed an early lead, playing some great football with accurate passing and excellent team goals. The defence worked hard all game, winning the ball back and linking well with the midfield to keep the pressure on.

The team played strong for the whole match and were rewarded with their first win of the season, finishing 8–5. A great effort from everyone!

Player of the Day: Reuben H**e
Reuben was rock solid in defence, breaking up Wanaka’s attacks and clearing the ball well. He also scored a brilliant goal, pushing up from a corner, picking up the ball in midfield, dribbling through the opposition and slotting it past the keeper. A goal he won’t forget anytime soon!

Awesome work from the whole team! ⚽👏

Under 9 -
We played a Wānaka team today, it was a fairly even game, we were 2-1 up at half time. Not sure of the final score but think they got us by one …? We’ll say 4-5, may have been 4 all. We created heaps of scoring chances which was really positive, and improving each week with our passing accuracy. Our PoD today is a player new to the game but has showed massive improvement in the few short weeks he’s been playing - he showed strength and determination on defence and has some really good go forward touches on attack also scoring his first ever goal. Great job Joey 🤩

Tough day at the office for matak green 10/11.. up against a very slick and well drilled wanaka team.. 9 or 10-0 could easily been worse but the kidss dug in an shut them out for a few good periods of the game..

Stellan Dixon got player of the day.. all over the place when needed on defense asking every tackle count and supporting every attack easily his best game this year

This weekend our Under 12/13s travelled to Queenstown to take on a Queenstown side. On a cold morning it took the team a little while to warm into the game, and we found ourselves 3–0 down early.

To the kids’ credit, they showed huge determination and teamwork, fighting their way back to take a 5–3 lead with some great attacking football. Queenstown pulled one back midway through the second half to make it 5–4 with about 15 minutes to go.

Matak dug deep with some great defence and pushing forward, taking shots from everywhere, with a couple unlucky efforts bouncing off the crossbar. With around 90 seconds left, Queenstown managed to sneak one past a tiring defence to level the game in a dramatic finish.

Goals:
⚽ Smith – 3
⚽ Arden – 1
⚽ Rhys – 1

Player of the Day – Smith Naylor
Smith was everywhere on the field. He scored a brilliant hat-trick and created several other chances with his excellent ball control, dribbling past defenders with ease. What stood out even more was his work rate – he didn’t just attack, he was constantly tracking back on defence, making strong tackles and helping win the ball back. An outstanding all-round performance and well deserved Player of the Day.

Proud of the effort from the whole team for fighting back and never giving up! 💪⚽

Last weekend our U12/13 team travelled to Wanaka for a tough away game. The boys put in a great shift and held most of the possession throughout the match. Unfortunately we just couldn’t quite convert our chances in front of goal and ended up going down 5–2.

Player of the Day went to Evan Thurlow. In the words of Steve H**e, it was the best game he’s ever seen Evan play. Evan was relentless with his pressure on the opposition, chased the ball all day, and even showed off some fancy footwork. Awesome effort, Evan — well deserved!

To top it off, it was a trifecta for the Thurlow family last weekend, with all three of their kids taking home Player of the Day for their respective teams. An awesome achievement and something to be proud of! 👏⚽
