Last weekend was the first ever 2 day second grade match between the Willow Warriors and Leather Legends held at King George Park.
It was great to see a mix of all clubs in our grade from Union, Valley, Oamaru, Albion, Waitaki Boys' and SKC.
The Willow warriors won the toss and decided to bat first. Sarel Smit and Angrej Sandhu both put on 42 for the 1st wicket when Sarel (16) out LBW which then quickly became 48/2 when Albin Mathew Elamthuruthiyil was dismissed for 0. Jeff McCormack put on 16 before he was caught behind just on lunch by his brother Brian McCormack at 90/3. Angrej was eventually dismissed for 64 but as the rain got heavier play was eventually abandoned with the score 129/4 at 42 overs.
Day 2 saw the Warriors continuing on with contributions from Glen Curry (25), Lachlan Evans (34), Jikku Joseph (51*) and Gerry Evans (22*) to reach 255/7 off 60 overs as playing conditions were revised.
The leather legends then had their turn at bat but had a challenging time in the middle with the highest scores only being 11 runs from Job Varghese, Brian McCormack and Nathan Barnes as the Warriors ripped through them and scored 110 all out at 25 overs. Gerry Evans 2-14 and Glen Curry 2-2.
The Warriors leading by 145 runs decided to bat on but it was a shaky start as they slumped to 33/6 then Jeff McCormack (35*) and Sarel Smit (45) ended up putting on 95 runs to eventually declare at 139/8. Richard Whitham took 4-23 and Nathan Barnes 2-18.
The legends were then set 285 runs with limited time and light in the match and could only manage 100/8 off 20 overs. Richard Whitham (29*) followed by Luke Harraway (18) and Mitch Walker (14). Angrej Sandhu took 3-17 and Sarel Smit 3-18.
