At Snap Fishing Ventures (SFV) we have fast boats and go wide in search of workups (Whales, Dolphins and birds working the bait). We specialise in all types of jigging for Snapper, Kingfish, JD's, Gurnard, Kahawai, Trevally... (especially love to slow jig for big snapper). We provide all the latest fishing gear (Rods, reels and lures etc) and will show you how to rig them and fish them for success

. SFV are involved in testing and refining lures for the market (we write articles for NZ FishingNews on our findings). We also provide reports on the Hauraki Gulf fishing for Radio Live (sometimes from the boat on a Friday night so fresh info). Basically we really enjoy teaching people what we have learnt and hopefully getting them a PB fish. Nik (Capt Snap) has been fishing the beautiful and bountiful Hauraki Gulf since a child (over 40 years). Having fished this area extensively all year round and for many years, and through determination and local knowledge, Nik understands how and why this area fishes. Around 2004 Nik started using softbaits/plastics and metal lures with great success, and it became an important way to fish. In 2007 his team entered into the first ever Berkley Gulp softbait competition in NZ and took home the inaugural prize.

Gotta love finding biomass and reaping the rewards.

This bait had more snapper than kingfish on it but was in the same area! 🎣🐟

The Uroco Original Jig is a proven performer here in NZ with an 80-400g range.

I normally deploy them for kingfish, but yesterday the deepwater snapper simply couldn't leave the 300g one alone. Dropping down quickly into the depths, they were absolutely lethal out wide! 🎣

You can check them out at monsterfishing.co.nz by searching Uroco original jig. They explain here how and why they are so successful.

Today 10 years ago off Takapuna cliffs. Yep I was using bait for a good old strayline session. 🎣🐟

Really miss this great boat. Found many workups out wide on her (my early reconnaissance boat when first started charters).πŸ›₯

Every time I head out over the past 2 months, I see two purse seiners working around and inside the Hen and Chicks. When the bait gets removed, everything feels the effects β€” snapper, kingfish, gannets, dolphins and the local charter operators and recreational fishers who rely on a healthy inshore fishery.🏝

With that in mind, I wasn't expecting much today.

Fortunately, the ocean surprised us. We found a solid patch of snapper in 92 metres, and from 8:45am to 10am the bins filled quickly. Some fat gurnard joined the party too. 🐟🎣

No kingfish this time, but seeing long-time regulars go home with a great feed is what it's all about.

Isn't it awesome to finally have some decent weather! 🌞

Took clients out today after postponing this trip six times due to weather.

A lot of the local bait has been taken recently, which has made finding fish in some of the usual winter hotspots a lot harder.

We searched hard all day and finally found some local biomass in the last hour. What started as an 8-hour charter turned into 9.5 hours. 85% of the fish caught in the final 30 minutes!

Lost 2 good kingfish in deep water over sand, due to braid lines crossing (had 3 kingfish on as we got pack attacked). Got the third one who cut the others off to the boat and saw it close up (over a metre). Was still green and got off at the boat whilst going crazy! πŸ€ͺ🎣

That's fishing β€” never give up.

Absolute mayhem! πŸ”₯

This time last year we were doing this... 1m kingfish on the light gear over sand in 75m of water..

Hopefully the next week brings more of the same and the biomass is hanging around the usual spots. After plenty of weather delays, we're finally getting a few charters back on the water. 🌬

Can't wait to see what's out there. πŸ”

We spend plenty of money on tackle, but how often do we look after the gear that looks after it?

My Meiho tackle box has had a hard year bouncing around the boat, covered in salt and fish slime. A quick clean and some Liquid Armour has brought it back to life. 😍

Looking almost as good as the day I bought it.
