Mid morning start and headed up to Bream Bay. Lots of gannets spread out from Bream Head to The Chicks, definitely a day where the Garmin sounder was our best friend. Finding the right work up was worth the effort with either bottom or mid water bites, gurnard and snapper where plentiful but not huge, best snapper was Kezzas 4kg effort. Great crew who worked the lures hard all day and reaped the rewards, enough kept for a few feeds and dozens released.

Lots of Gannet work ups in a Bream Bay at the moment, today they were up off Ruakaka Beach. Didn’t chase them but managed to snag this nice 60cm Snapper in 30m off Bream Tail.

Mangawhai Easter fishing comp today, quick trip out to the 50m area straight out from Mangawhai bar. Non stop snapper all morning, crazy action that saw snapper taking everything including flasher rigs with no bait. Managed a few decent ones amongst the 30-40cm ones. A couple of rat kingfish and a Kahawai that was good enough to win the heaviest of the day. 10nm travelled and only used 8 litres of petrol.

Dawn launch to target John Dory in Bream Bay on the out going tide.

Plenty of live bait was quickly located and caught with a mixture of good sized Jack Macs and a few Slimey Macks. Tried the reef off Lang’s Point for nothing so headed up to the 16m reef off Waipu River Mouth and got straight into them. Not a huge amount but the ones that are there were big. Largest going 50cm and once a feed was caught headed home.

Leisurely start to the day, called into Top Catch Mangawhai for some ice and launched just after 7am. Headed straight up to Bream Bay to chase work ups, slow start but once they started it was full on for 30mins then steady but slow for rest of the morning. Moved down to off Tara Iti golf course at lunchtime and fished in 40m drifting some sliders and had a great 30min bite time with snapper in the 50-60cm range. Pink Coindrop was deadly all day.

Day one of NZ Lure Masters was a struggle. Spent the day off the sand from Mangawhai down to Pakiri. Steady bite all day with Snapper, Kingfish, gurnard and even a Slender Tuna. Nothing big landed but lost a really nice snapper to a big Bronzy right at the boat. Massive work up mid afternoon in the same place as yesterday but the nor’easter had kicked in and it was virtually unfishable.

Wicked day out today, start of Hirepool Baitmates comp and reccy for Lure Masters tomorrow. Lots of Jack Macs and Slimey Macs at the livebait spot. Sail Rock is very quiet but gannets and dolphins in 40-45 metres from Bream Bay all the way to Te Arai. Snapper and Gurnard are out at the usual 50m spots but the best action was around lunchtime at 45m just off Tara Iti Golf Course. Massive work ups with snapper from 45-55cm and bigger. Everything got bitten from Zman in Fuliser to Orange sliders and best fishing was areas 15 minutes behind the birds.

Headed out to The Mokes yesterday because it was just too nice a day not to. Stunning conditions all morning allowed me to have a good look around. Very quiet at Groper so headed towards Nivare, stopped at the deep reef between Burgess and Fanal and picked up a few pannie snapper only. Got a couple of really nice snapper close in on the south side of Nivare. Headed to Maori Rock via bottom end of Fanal and lots of bait schools but no Kingfish wanted to play ball. Popped out to the deeper reefs and was rewarded with a few nice Kings but nothing over 1m. Picked up a nice snapper just as the Northerly started so headed for home. Stopped at the 60m line just out from Mangawhai and the snapper were hungry, smashing Jitterbugs in both Orange and Bruised banana.

Launched early this morning to beat the rush and headed up to Bream Tail. Plenty of sign and small birds but not a lot of action. Bite time was supposed to be between 8 and 9 so I kept an eye on the birds which start flying out wide about 7.30. Headed out towards Sail Rock and from about 40m onwards it was all on, gannets, dolphins, whales and Snapper everywhere. Lots of snapper in the 45-60cm range, biggest and the most were caught on a 60gm white Lucanus. 5” Coral trout jerk-shad was also producing well.
