Oko’s Place Oko’s Place offers anyone interested in horses the chance to learn about them in a safe and empathetic way.

We offer riding, groundwork lessons and pre-school pony play time. Oko's place doesn't use bits, whips, spurs or hard kicks as teaching tools.

Hi all! I’ve opened up a second session for 1pm on Saturdays so we now have 10.30 and 1pm available. At this stage we are fully booked until the 1st week of August for weekend sessions.

Pony Play Time! Only 14 minutes out of Rangiora. Bring the little ones along for a fun experience around safe and friendly ponies. We have a lovely spacious lawn with a table and chairs over-looking the arena and yards for visitors to relax and enjoy the views. This is a shared experience with a maximum 2 children. Oops Chase is home. He was perfectly lovely for the humans and very well behaved but had trouble assimilating into the herd of new ponies. I usually give it at least 5 weeks to see who a new horse actually is because they do need time to settle in but sadly for Chase this wasn’t an option.

Anyway, maybe it wasn’t meant to be. What Ive learnt about Chase in his time away is that he was totally obsessed with their wee toddler and followed her around like a puppy. He’s very sweet.

I didn’t realise Chase loves toddlers! Welcome home Chase I have a job for you at Pony Play Time 🥰 Also how crazy are these forelocks (ponies fringes) - Im not allowed to trim them haha

We’ve had a few people tell us that we should charge more for our sessions. Ive thanked them and explained the reason we charge what we charge is considered, we just want the ponies who live here to have a purpose, to share our passion for horsemanship and for money to not be a hindrance for any child who loves ponies. 💓🦄 If you know anyone who would enjoy some time with the ponies send them over :)

This is very true. They just don’t throw their head around or fight the rider as much without a bit in their mouth 💓 There was a bridle-less competition in England recently which is where the bridle-less clip is from 💓

Today we are taking my dear pony to what is hopefully his new home for a while. Chase is a free bird and isn’t keen on arena work - he loves running on the beach, through the forest, and jumping. Now Elina is too big, I think he’s bored here.

A suitable home has come up for him (wee boy with a love for adventure and a shared distaste for arena work). He will come back here once he’s finished having fun with his new friends - I imagine he and I will sit quietly together in our shared retirement one day ❤️ In the meantime - Have fun out there Chase!

This wee man’s Mum kindly offered for me to use these pics as an example of a Pony Playtime session. He loves this game and Oko could care less about a child waving a net and ball around - these games are done to create balance and to keep busy minds focused - future polo players perhaps 🤔
