Kia ora Clubs,

With the Colgate Games coming to Taranaki in January 2028, now is a great time for us to start building and strengthening our team of officials across the region.

Athletics Taranaki is hosting a Level 1 Officials Course, presented by Sheelagh Prosser, Athletics New Zealand Officials Educator, and we would love clubs to encourage members, parents, volunteers, coaches and anyone interested in athletics to take part.

Becoming an official is a fantastic way to get involved up close to the action and support our athletes. Officiating is flexible, enjoyable, and you can choose to help at as many or as few events as your availability allows.

We would particularly love to see new officials coming through ahead of Colgate Games 2028, so that we can continue to grow a confident and capable local officiating team.

We would also warmly encourage our already qualified and experienced officials to attend the course as a refresher. Your experience will be invaluable, and we would love to develop a mentoring approach where experienced officials can support and guide those who are just starting their officiating journey.

Level 1 Officials Course
The Level 1 course is a great introduction to athletics from an official’s perspective. It covers what officials are looking for, how events operate, and how officials can help athletes compete in an encouraging and supportive environment.

The free course includes:

Safeguarding
Introduction to track and field
Walk around the track covering markings and events
Open-book assessment
Tea, coffee and a light lunch

The course is being held in partnership with Athletics Taranaki and is a great opportunity for us to continue developing the depth of officiating knowledge within our clubs.

Please share this with your members, parents, volunteers and anyone you think may be interested.

It would be fantastic to see a strong group of new and experienced officials involved as we work towards hosting a successful Colgate Games in January 2028.

Many thanks in advance for your support.
