⚽ Ngunguru Women’s vs Bream Bay – Plate Final, Trigg Stadium ⚽
It was a blazing sunny morning at Trigg Stadium, the kind of day finals are made for. Walking out of the tunnel, it wasn’t just pride that filled the air it was duty. A duty to ourselves, to each other, and to our supporters to bring the Plate home.
Bream Bay had a new face in goal, a keeper we hadn’t come up against before. Unknown territory. From the first whistle, Ngunguru Women came out firing shots whistling over the bar, smashing the post, brushing the side netting. The intent was there. The crowd could feel it. After five minutes, Bream Bay clearly saw the havoc Bee was creating and made an early tactical shift, planting a man-marker on her. That decision left space for our golden boot sniper Abbey, and we knew chances would come.
But the heat and the size of the pitch started to weigh heavy on our legs after just 15 minutes. Bream Bay settled into their rhythm, keeping constant pressure, while we surged forward in bursts. Charlotte, in goal, was immense pulling off save after save to keep us alive.
Then, the breakthrough: a perfectly timed ball from the backline over their defence. Abbey lit up the pitch, outpacing everyone, one-on-one with the keeper. No hesitation. She rifled it top right. 1–0 Ngunguru.
But with halftime looming, a momentary lapse proved costly. Bream Bay’s wingers stretched our backline wide, whipped in a cross, and their striker buried it. 1–1 at the break. Red faces, empty water bottles, cramping legs. Some players muttered, “I don’t know how much longer my legs can last.” Only 45 more minutes to fight.
The second half was a true battle. The referee kept the physicality in check, but Bream Bay’s relentless midfield pressure told. Twenty minutes in, one of their midfielders unleashed a long-range strike. Charlotte leapt but could only tip it as it clipped over her fingers. 2–1 Bream Bay.
We fell quiet. For a moment. But tactical switches from Sandi and Jay and the roar from our supporters reignited the fire. With bodies on the line, every tackle and clearance mattered. Then came the magic. Jayde, outmuscling their winger, charged forward. From an almost impossible angle near the goal line, she curled the ball with audacious precision into the side netting. 85th minute. 2–2. The stadium erupted. The ground shook. We weren’t done.
The plan was clear: drag it to penalties. We switched keepers, held possession, and the final whistle blew. But the real drama was just beginning.
Penalty shootout. Our five lined up with confidence Bee, Jayde, Sophie, Abbey and Ayla
Ngunguru won the toss we would shoot first.
• Bee stepped up. Ten seconds of ice-cold focus. Hammered it left corner. Goal. 1–0.
• Bream Bay’s first taker cracked under pressure. Crossbar. Miss.
• Jayde followed, calm as ever. Side-foot, clean, 2–0.
• Bream Bay struck back, 2–1.
• Sophie walked up with her daughter’s first birthday in mind. She smashed it home. Happy birthday Ocea. 3–1.
• Their shooter responded, Leah’s fingertips brushing it, but it went in. 3–2.
• Abbey was up next. Composed. Clinical. 4–2.
That left it all on Bream Bay’s shoulders. Miss, and we were champions. Their player walked to the spot in slow motion, the weight of her team on her back. She struck and launched it over the bar.
Ngunguru erupted. The bench cleared, the sideline roared, and the pitch became a sea of celebration. 4–2 on penalties. The Plate was ours.
What an end to the season. We stayed focused, we dug deeper than ever, and we delivered. We couldn’t have done it without our coaches, our subs, and our supporters, who carried us every step of the way.
Ngunguru Women weren’t just winners. We were warriors. And we put on a show.
