Becoming a Fitzroy SLSC Patrol Member
Lifesaving is our clubs foremost concern and Fitzroy Beach is patrolled every weekend throughout the summer months – November through to mid-March – by volunteer lifeguards. Paid lifeguards patrol the beach over the week days during January and February. The Lifeguards

survey the beach and surf to locate safe swim areas and also to identify any risks to public safety
set out the red and yellow patrol flags, showing the safest place to swim
set up the IRB, rescue and first aid equipment so it is ready should any emergency arise
constantly scan the beach for any dangers, changing conditions or people in trouble
work with the general public, teaching them how to recognise dangers at the beach and helping them to prevent getting into trouble
rescue people who get into difficulty whilst in the water
maintain the communications and rescue equipment including the IRBs
Becoming a Lifeguard
To become a lifeguard you must complete your Surf Lifeguard Award (historically known as the Bronze Medallion award). You can start doing your training for this at any time but can only sit the exam for the award once you have turned 14 years old. The club usually starts training the new lifeguards once you are 14 (or if you are 13 and will be 14 during the coming season). Fitzroy SLSC runs classes during September and October, preparing you for your award. You will work through a work book with an instructor covering theory around First Aid, beach management, emergency responses, communication and lifeguarding skills. Practical skills are also taught and assessed. To gain your Surf Lifeguard Award, all of the below criteria will need to be assessed and passed.

400m pool swim
tube rescue in pool and surf environment
200m run- 200m swim- 200m run
practical CPR assessment
theory test based on information learnt from the manual
The club wants as many skilled and competent lifeguards patrolling Fitzroy beach as possible, so we will do all we can to help you get to the level required to pass the Surf Lifeguard Award.

Well done to the quick-thinking member of the public and the Fitzroy Lifeguards who assisted with yesterday’s rescue. 👏

A great reminder of how important it is to stay alert around the water and speak up when someone needs help.

Thanks to everyone involved for helping keep our beach safe. 🌊💙

A surfer caught in massive swells off New Plymouth's Fitzroy Beach was safely rescued yesterday afternoon, thanks to a concerned member of the public and swift work by local surf lifeguards.

The alarm was raised at about 3:20 pm on Sunday. A bystander noticed the surfer appearing unable to return to shore in the challenging sea conditions and called the police. The surfer was roughly 200 metres offshore at the time.

Conditions were rough, with winds estimated at 30 to 40 knots whipping up swells of around two metres.

Taranaki Police Search and Rescue Detective Nathan Hessell said his team immediately contacted Surf Life Saving New Zealand.

Fitzroy Surf Life Saving Club volunteers promptly deployed an inflatable rescue boat to the area. Three lifeguards responded to the callout, with two heading out on the water and one coordinating onshore with an all-terrain vehicle.

The surfer was successfully pulled from the water 40 minutes after surf lifeguards were notified. Ambulance staff assessed and treated him at the scene. He was very cold but did not require transport to Taranaki Base Hospital.

Detective Hessell credited the successful outcome to the bystander who spoke up.

"We're grateful to the member of the public who called Police after recognising the surfer may be in difficulty," he said. "Their quick actions helped get assistance deployed promptly."

He also praised the Fitzroy surf lifeguards who navigated the rough seas to carry out the rescue. He described the conditions as extremely challenging due to the strong winds and significant swells.

"Surf Life Saving's swift and professional response ensured the surfer was brought safely back to shore," Detective Hessell said. "We're pleased this incident had a positive outcome and thank everyone involved for their efforts."

Police are reminding anyone planning to head into the water along the Taranaki coastline to check weather and sea conditions beforehand, understand their limits and always take appropriate safety precautions.
