The hunt for committee members for NTCA, this page, and our Facebook group continues!

Keeping this group going includes:
- monitoring emails and sending newsletters
- keeping some regular social media posts going
- staying aware of council projects and submitting and advocating for bike improvements
- planning events or campaigns, if you're keen, or any other projects/activities that you think would support better biking in our district!

This group can be as big or small as you want, and putting your name forward leaves lots of room for you to help our bike community in your own way. Send us a message or email [email protected] if you're interested or have any questions!

Could you be the next coordinator/admin for NTCA, this page, and our Facebook group?

The role involves:
- monitoring emails and sending newsletters
- keeping some regular social media posts going
- staying aware of council projects and submitting on bike related stuff
- planning events or campaigns, if you're keen, or any other projects/activities that you think would support better biking in our district!

The role can be as big or small as you want, would definitely suit being a team effort, and leaves lots of room for you to help our bike community in your own way. Send us a message if you're interested or have any questions!

Have you had your say on the Minister of Transport's draft speed-setting rule?

Lower road speeds are more welcoming and safer for people on bikes , but this rule would reverse safer speed decisions made by councils since 2020.

The proposal's open for public consultation until Thursday 11 July, so now's your chance, and we strongly encourage you to take a minute to add your voice. πŸ“’πŸ›‘

In our latest newsletter we shared our guide to the consultation, which you can find here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PeiHy1zgugE7DCD6il2nSvc438XZNRhLxenFV99UVMo/edit?usp=sharing

Then, when you're ready, The consultation is here: https://consult.transport.govt.nz/policy/setting-of-speed-limits-2024-consultation/consultation/intro/

Investing in biking is a great way to achieve the three priorities of the New Plymouth District Council 10-Year Plan! Better biking would Future-proof Our District, Improve Sustainability, and Pay it Forward for future generations.

If you agree, NOW is the time to let NPDC know. Submissions on the plan close at 5pm tomorrow, Friday 19 April, so have your say today!

Cyclists and cycling supporters of Aotearoa, check out the campaign. The campaign is a collaborative effort of great transport groups and was created in response to the government's latest land transport draft that is currently open to submissions.

The team have developed resources like a submission guide, with actions you can take in 5 minutes, 15 minutes, or 30+ minutes.

Your voice matters, so have your say before 2 April!

This is so awesome from New Plymouth Bike Kitchen - free community bicycle workshop! If you're keen to see how an e-bike might work for you, this would be a great low-cost way to start. 🚲🚲

Who is next to become part of the eBike revolution? At Bike Kitchen we have been repairing and reconditioning ebikes for a while now. We often have 1 or 2 used or reconditioned bikes available for interested parties (although they are not kept in the workshop for security reasons). Ask our contact person, Robert for details. Our latest bike is a reconditioned SmartMotion eCity, mostly put together with donations from 3 different people ('you probably don't need these, but ...'). A big thank you by the way to all our donors who take the trouble to think about us when they have surplus bikes or bike parts. This is a fully functioning ebike which is available for offers over $150 for anybody who is ready to ditch the car for the commute or shopping runs. It will be available in the shop to look at it during our Wednesday session (5 to 7pm).

The government's draft policy on land transport doesn't give much love to bikes or the people who ride them. This is all the more reason to speak up and speak out for biking as an awesome form of transport that is good for individuals and good for our towns and cities! 🚲🧑🚲🧑

If you want to show your love for cycling here are some things you can do:

🚲 Join Cycling Action Network (the national group we are affiliated with)

🧑 Talk to someone about why you ride a bike or what would make it better

🚲 Write an email to your local MP about why cycling should have a place in our government's land transport policies. If you're in New Plymouth, David MacLeod's email address is [email protected]

🧑 Go for a bike ride, and making cycling more visible in your town or city

🚲 Make a submission on the Taranaki Regional Council land transport plan in support of cycling at haveyoursay.trc.govt.nz/taranaki-regional-land-transport-plan

🧑 Join our Facebook group North Taranaki Cycling Advocates Group and share your ideas for local actions/campaigns for biking

🚲 Read the government plan and make a submission at www.transport.govt.nz/area-of-interest/strategy-and-direction/government-policy-statement-on-land-transport-2024/
