New Plymouth’s Paritutu Club successfully hosted its first ever New Zealand Professional Bowls Association Finals Weekend over the weekend with qualifiers from around the country enjoying the Taranaki hospitality.

Southland’s Aiden Takarua capped off an amazing rookie year having won three qualifiers in Invercargill completing the weekend with a win over Auckland’s Nick Thompson 8-6, 12-0. Takarua not only wins the Number One Rookie trophy but will wing his way to the World Indoor Singles in Norfolk directly after he defends his national outdoor singles title.

New Plymouth’s Paritutu Club successfully hosted its first ever New Zealand Professional Bowls Association Finals Weekend over the weekend with qualifiers from around the country enjoying the Taranaki hospitality.

The World Indoor Pairs saw three rookies in the final with PBA’s newest branch Tauranga coming out on top in a close final. The Bay of Plenty pair of Anthony Ouellet and Chris Smith beat Manawatu’s Brian Looker and Hawkes Bay’s Hein Pharenqua 9-8, 10-7. Ouellet and Smith will journey to the Potter’s Leisure Resort in Norfolk in January. 23-year old Ouellet will also receive a nomination for the World Under 25 Singles for the one international branch slot.

In a titanic struggle with the tiebreak heads changing constantly Whanganui’s Kaylin Huwyler upset Southland’s Craig Merrilees in the final of the Scottish Singles playoffs 7-10, 11-3, 2-1. Huwyler will play at the West Lothian club near Edinburgh November 5-7th with the draw being announced this Wednesday.

Dunedin’s Martin Kreft followed up on his spectacular run in last season’s World Indoor Singles by winning New Zealand’s nomination for the UK Singles beating Taranaki’s Wayne Hawkes 11-1, 7-6. The UK Singles has been in limbo a couple of years pending sponsorship but is usually played in March and was last hosted in Newcastle.
