കേരളത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ന്യൂസിലാൻഡിൽ എത്തിയ നിതിൻ, അപർണ എന്നീ ദമ്പതികളുടെ 5 വയസ്സുള്ള മകനാണ് ഓട്ടിസം ഉണ്ടെന്നുള്ള കാരണത്താൽ നാടുകടത്തൽ നടപടി നേരിടുന്നത്.

2024-ൽ നഴ്സിംഗ് രെജിസ്ട്രേഷൻ എടുക്കാൻ ന്യൂസിലാൻഡിൽ എത്തിയ നിതിൻ, വർക്ക് വിസ കിട്ടിയ ശേഷം, ഭാര്യയെയും മകനെയും നെൽസണിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടു വന്നു, തുടർന്ന് റെസിഡൻസി വിസയ്ക്കായി അപേക്ഷ സമർപ്പിച്ചപ്പോഴാണ് മകന് വിസ നിഷേധിച്ചത്.

അസോസിയേറ്റ് ഇമിഗ്രേഷൻ മന്ത്രി ക്രിസ് പെങ്കിന് ഇവർ നൽകിയ അപ്പീൽ നിരസിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. ദമ്പതികൾക്ക് റെസിഡൻസി വിസ ലഭിച്ചുവെങ്കിലും ഇവരുടെ മകൻ "നിയമവിരുദ്ധമായി" രാജ്യത്തു തുടരുകയാണെന്ന് മന്ത്രി പറഞ്ഞു.

ഇവരുടെ കുട്ടിക്ക് മറ്റൊരാളുടെ സഹായം ആവശ്യമായതിനാൽ, ഒന്നുകിൽ കുടുബം ഒന്നായിട്ടോ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അമ്മയും മകനും ഇന്ത്യയിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങാൻ സാധ്യതയുണ്ട്.

I met with Nithin and some of his supporters this morning, about the terrible decision by Associate Immigration Minister Chris Penk to not grant Nithin’s son Aidhan, who has autism, a visa to stay in New Zealand.

Nithin is a registered nurse and his wife is a healthcare assistant and on the journey to working as a nurse in New Zealand too.

I have been inundated with letters of support for Nithin and his family, from colleagues, residents at the retirement home he works at, and members of the Nelson community who know him.

On Monday I will be resubmitting a new Ministerial request to Chris Penk, with these support letters attached. If you know Nithin personally, and would like to write a letter of support please email this to me at [email protected]

We will also be working to arrange a petition so that all Nelsonians and others who care about this case can show their support and push the Minister to make a different decision.

This is a matter of policy, and of ministerial discretion. It is always New Zealand policy to set an “Acceptable Standard of Health” for granting a visa. The policy question is whether that line is set in the right place.

Regardless of policy though, the Minister always has the right to apply discretion and grant visas outside of policy. In my view, this case easily meets that test, given how desperately we need nursing and health staff in New Zealand. It would be a massive loss to Nelson if Nithin and his family were forced to leave New Zealand.
