We never got around to posting on day two of our Nelson Lakes Gravel Weekend — we were just too busy getting everyone where they needed to be! 🚐🚲

Anyway, here’s a bit of a photo and video bomb from the weekend 📸🎥 We’ve now run this tour six times, with repeat customers coming back for every iteration.

This one was particularly logistically challenging, as we were running ahead of the weather that has since closed quite a few roads on the West Coast and around Murchison 🌧️ However, we pulled it off and had plenty of happy customers! 🙌

But for now have a read about it. It’s quite hard to explain, but it really ticks the boxes for all kinds of riders — whether you’re chasing kilometres or chasing scenery 🚴‍♀️🏔️

Day one on the Nelson lakes Gravel ride. We have a younger group heading up the Baton, and the other setting of on a relaxed schedule from Tapawera after a chat and a cuppa.
We'll head off soon and head off over the beautiful sherry river road while our second driver takes over in the support vehicle.
Just payed tribute to two of my favourite explorers at the gate way to Kahurangi ( Brunner on the left and Kehu on the right) . Everbodies aim today is to get to the lake Rotoroa BBQ warm and dry.... Weather looks good so far, with a cool wind and a touch of snow on the local hills

Ever wondered what the difference is between a public access easement and a paper road? Here’s a simple way to tell them apart.👇

These two access terms get mixed up a lot, so here’s a simple breakdown:

A public access easement gives people a legal right to cross private land for access.

A paper road is a legal road that exists on the map, even if it has never been formed on the ground. It is still public road land.

So the main difference is:

👉Easement = access over private land.

What that means in the real world is that it can be closed for safety reasons by the owner. They are required to put up a sign saying that the easement is closed. If you see a sign up saying do not enter, DON"T , you’ll be trespassing⚠️

👉Paper road = public road, even if unformed.

What that means in the real world is that only the local roading authority can shut them down. In Nelson, for example, it’s the Nelson City Council. Again, signage must be displayed.

If you have a problem with the way a PAE (public access easement) is being closed, the best people to talk to are the landowners. Sometimes they genuinely don’t know the implications of the closures for public access, and in some cases they are not even the land managers. Failing that contact the Walking Access Commission

For paper roads, speak to the council. But just one more word on paper roads: sometimes these run directly through people’s property, and sometimes the landowners don’t even know about them. Don’t go waltzing through — have a bit of tact and go and have a yarn with them. Most landowners are pretty friendly and are happy to let you go through to access public land.😊

If you like exploring, these provide valuable access into the outdoors. We thoroughly recommend heading to the Walking Access Commission’s online maps and seeing what adventures lie in your area beyond the beaten track.

Hot tip: they even have a phone app called "Pocket Maps" that has offline mapping resources for when you are in the thick of it.

A last-minute Sunday walking option in Hira 🌿

With Kaka Road now open, access to the Sharlands Bush Conservation Covenant is on the cards
The covenant has a great shared-use track network through beautiful native bush, with a few walking options and a lookout at the top. We had a wander through yesterday and thought it could be a nice option for anyone keen to explore somewhere a little different.

To make access easier, we’re running a one off $20 hiker shuttles this Sunday. We’ll take walkers up to the top, talk through the available routes, and can provide a return shuttle down if needed.
