I'm so proud of Daniel - Huge day yesterday!

After the medal presentation ceremony today:

Squat - 4th
Bench - 4th (just - he was close to third!)
Deadlift - 2nd

It was a tough start, missing his three squats, (they judge each discipline as it's own competition, so a medal for each) the way he reset for bench (which is his least favourite), listened, and pushed on says everything about his character.

It was a good opportunity for us to learn more about Daniel too! For those at home, although positive, it's a loud intense environment, one that's not easy to replicate in a gym or studio.
We went down there with a goal to break his personal best in deadlift (179kg) and his third lift 182.5kg with such strength brought tears to my eyes. Just one year ago, his personal best was 70kg!

Huge ups to Brendan Knauf from Disability Training Services - DTS Epic Pathways who was the backbone of our small team, if we needed anything, he was there. Also a massive thank you for the encouragement from Anne and the HB Special Olympics team for their support.

Apparently Powerlifting is now everyone's favourite sport to watch in the HB team now!

Daniel has been in Christchurch since Wednesday, I've landed safe this morning, arrived at the venue and we are ready to go!

Just going through the rack heights, into warm up, then we are into it!

Lifting starts at 10am.

It's such a pleasure to train Daniel. It's only been around 18 months for me, 9 years for Brendan. I approached Brendan through his work at Disability Training Services - DTS Epic Pathways who I met through my Napier City Council Accessibility portfolio. I wanted to do some more volunteering post Covid and Cyclone, but this time, utilise my skills as a coach. I asked if he knew of anyone he works with that has some good strength to refine.....

Here we are, this time next week we will be in Christchurch warming up ready to go! I'm really looking forward to this! Special mention to my "gym wife" Aimee who has also helped us through with her extra set of eyes and referee knowledge.

When Daniel Siaosi steps on the platform, it'll be a culmination of a decade of resolve.

Next weekend marks a huge milestone for ICN New Zealand our very first ICN Oceania Championships, including the first-ever Pro Show on NZ soil! 🇳🇿🏆

We’ve got teams flying in from Australia and across the Pacific, and it’s shaping up to be something truly special.

For some, it’s a Pro debut; for all, it's a chance to beat their previous self. Every athlete that takes that stage has earned their moment to shine.

I’m absolutely stoked to be Head Judging this event and putting my Oceania Certification (earned in Melbourne 2023) to use. I couldn't do it without being side by side with an incredible team of judges I’ve had the privilege to grow with and watch develop into the professional crew they are today.

After seeing everyone bring their best at the ICN Nationals in Taupō last weekend, I can’t wait to see Team NZ step up again and showcase what makes our ICN family so strong, heart, humility, and hard work.
