Hockey has been played throughout Hawke’s Bay by both men and women since the late 1800’s with archives showing representative teams competing for the Province since that time. Initially and
for most of the past century, Hawke’s Bay Hockey operated as an umbrella Association with 3 sub-associations in Napier, Hastings and Central Hawke’s Bay, then in 1977, the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association, in its present form, was formally incorporated. For many years, hockey was primarily based at Marewa Park in Napier and Frimley Park in Hastings but with various other parks used throughout the Region. The completion of the artificial turf in 1990 (initially a sand-based turf) at Park Island saw not only a shift of Club hockey from Marewa Park, but also a dramatic change to the game in Hawke’s Bay. A second water turf was completed in 2004 and the original turf converted to a water-based turf in 2006.
