the man, the myth, the legend. the patriarch of my family of origin completed his 94 years on earth in the early hours of christmas eve, at home & right by his love of 80 years. everything he wanted & knew would come to be for the ending of his life.

i had the honor of sharing 33 birthdays with my granddad. i grew up down the road from him, and he played an integral role in the shaping of who i am. a guide, leader, inspiration, coach, conversationalist, friend, and more. time with him was incredibly dynamic—

whether it was field trips to his place of work to see everything in action, time in his library hearing about how he was currently expanding his perspectives and wisdom with whatever he was currently interested in (and then sending me home with a new book), time meticulously perfecting my drive on the range with his masterful way of calibrating my movement patterns, time watching him adorably eye roll at the tubers at the lake while he coached all of his grandkids on the art of waterskiing & wakeboarding, time on the phone for an hour+ every time while we talked through his latest takes on political agendas & how to think critically and make sense of perceived chaos.

a synthesized version of everything i’ve learned from him would be a book on its own.

a man who believed deeply in the power of the mind & kept his mind sharp until the night he passed. a man who used his gifts diligently as he knew this was key for a long & purpose-filled life. a man who knew age meant an increase in wisdom & potential, not degeneration & stagnation. a man who knew movement was foundational to his vitality & continued his long walks + jogs right into his time of passing. a man who knew that belief systems dictate the health of the body, so he woke up every morning and spoke vitality in his prayers over each of his organs.

a man of faith who knew and taught that we are not mere victims in this life— that even nature itself demonstrates that what seems like chaos and confusion is actually quite simple, orderly, and made of patterns. it was the reason “doc” became known as the most trusted voice for hurricanes.

so grateful for his legacy, love, and leadership🤎

NZ // DAYS 2-4 // RAGLAN

side bar— did yall know my very first form of social media was a travel + wellness blog?😂 kyle & i did quite a bit of traveling prior to moving to hawai’i (6-7 trips a year), and koa tagged along with us everywhere once he was born. i would write up the whole trip & make recommendations through what we experienced, so this feels nostalgic to be bringing this back in a different form!

after a 9ish hour daytime flight to auckland, which ended up being the easiest flight we’ve ever taken (i’ll make a post on this as well), we stayed the night in auckland and headed down towards raglan the following morning.

friends who have been to raglan & know our family’s vibe highly recommended it to us, and it will be a town we will visit over and over again in the future.

laid-back surf vibes. locally owned & operated vintage + artisan shops. incredible food. coffee sourced straight the town. khruangbin playing in the cafes. kids corners in the stores with beautiful books & wooden toys so they can happily cruise while you’re browsing around. a stunning natural harbour for hours of swimming.

we spent 3 days completely blissed out. shoutout to you guys who gave us several recommendations as well. my highlights of raglan—

our airbnb was the most incredible off-grid experience that included hikes, glow worms, an outdoor shower & tub right on the deck, and the most beautiful views i’ve ever seen. we will be back again! i’ll link the airbnb in my stories

the beginnings of sweet summertime🌻

every meal outside. visits from family. ocean swims till the sun goes down. cousin hangs. long days in nature. campfires at night. summertime longboard waves. processing our own hunted axis meat for the first time. redlight lit homes after dark😂😂 our rooted families already know.

i love this season so much.

placenta planting & new life🪴

my views on placenta consumption (for myself) have evolved over the years—

for my first baby, i knew i wanted to take my placenta home with me after my hospital transfer & c-section as an obvious choice vs handing it over to the hospital, and everything i had read up until that point resonated with me as far as reasons *to* consume it.

what i’ve learned about myself is that experience > information for me all day long, and my experience actually consuming it in supplement form over the next few days was totally different. i would take it & feel wirey & anxious vs deeply grounded in my body, and eventually i stopped reaching for it all together.

for my next babe & my first home vbac, i decided to experiment with keeping my placenta in the fridge & see if it was something i desired to consume, knowing how foundationally nourished my body was. even with that 33 hour labor experience— what my body craved instead was bone broth, minerals on top of minerals, stews, & slow roasted meats. it felt like i had everything that i needed for nutrition & minerals right in front of me, and the placenta remained untouched.

by this third babe, in my educational preparation for birthing with just my husband, kids, and my village support present— i learned even more about the medicinal opportunities that the placenta offers that wise midwives have always known— namely for the neutralizing of heavier bleeding.

& that really landed me full circle in the nuances of the placenta. the medicinal opportunities it can offer when needed, and the question of “is this really necessary?” when the body is deeply nourished from the inside out.

to add to that, the reframing the picture of “but all mammals eat their placentas” to “mammals eat their afterbirth to hide scents as a survival instinct”

as a child, my mom planted her placenta after her third birth/home birth under new pear trees, and when i tell you that these were the most abundant fruit i’ve ever had (we had so much every season that we made loads & loads of pear preserves annually)

so here we are, planting ours under a mountain apple tree, with many memories as a family to come🍎

new beginnings🌻

moved to our new home in the mountains & our family rhythms the last few days have consisted of belly kisses, nature walks, gathering firewood, koa “the fire king” meloy making fires, early bedtimes, warm lattes & local pottery, and of course the kids & their cloaks.

nesting mode — ON.

snapshots in time from our little family babymoon we took on kauai this week.

slowing down, integrating more as a family, watching the sunrise + sunset, allowing any patterns to reveal themselves in the stillness, charging up in the sun + firelight, sitting down & eating every meal together outside, reading & journaling, laughing, taking long walks, just being together.
