🖤🤍Gifford Returns for 2027

Matamata Swifts AFC is pleased to confirm that Joe Gifford will return as the Comag Matamata Swifts 1st Team Head Coach for the 2027 season.

Our club is looking for stability, continuity and, ultimately, success and we believe Joe will help deliver that as we head into another busy season.

"We won't get results next year simply because we had a difficult time this year," explains Joe. "We’ll have to earn every improvement. It starts with the work between now and the opening whistle: preparing properly, making good decisions about the squad, and building a team that can stay in games when they become uncomfortable. We showed glimpses of the football we want to play in 2026. The challenge is to make those performances more frequent and to turn them into consistent results."

"Joe knows this squad, he knows where we fell short and he knows what we need to do to improve," said Swifts President, John Harris. "He has seen which players are ready for more responsibility, where the younger ones need help, and what the team needs to do better together. The club has learned a great deal as well. We’ll take that into our planning for next season and give Joe and the players the strongest platform we can."

There is a good deal of work ahead, and Joe will be right in the middle of it. He brings a clear understanding of this club, a belief in its young players, and the appetite to take on the lessons of 2026.

Welcome back for 2027, Joe. Let’s get to work.

Also, through our partners Ginga Futsal Academy - New Zealand , we can offer players the chance to be selected for tournament teams (for events both here in NZ and overseas).

Congratulations and well done to all the individual award winners at the 2026 Matamata Swifts Prizegiving.

We proudly recognised these people, our people, yesterday evening as we officially drew the 2026 winter season to a close.

It's been a season of ups and downs, as is often the case, but at the end of it we have another season promoting football in our community under our belts and sit one year closer to our Centennial.

Time for a break? Nope. Fez Kebab Summer 5-a-side begins this Thursday, while our various futsal teams hit the court from next weekend.

A large contingent of Matamata-based players headed to Melbourne during the school holidays to play for the NZ U17 Crosswhites team at the Australian CFFA tournament.

During the 3-day tournament, hosted at the Melbourne City Academy Football Facility, the team played six games against sides from across Australia. The team made it through to the play-off for 3rd, in which they beat the Sunshine Coast 2-0.

This was an immersive football and cultural experience for our young players and one of many positive footballing opportunities taken up by young Swifts footballers during this spring and summer.
