Wellington Harbour from 12,000 ft! 🛩️☁️

In the centre of the photo, you can see the Wellington Harbour, photographed from 12,000 ft over the Wairarapa on a wave day.

Photo by David Rattee flying with Grae Harrison on ZK-GUS.

But here’s the cool part: did you know a glider can climb from around 2,000 ft to 12,000 ft without an engine? 🤯

That’s the magic of wave flying, using the invisible lift created when strong winds flow over the mountains. 🌊⛰️

🛩️🔧 The annual inspections continue at WWGC!

More of our gliders are getting their yearly check-up, with plenty of careful work happening behind the scenes to keep the fleet safe, airworthy and ready for the soaring season. 💪☀️

Thanks to all our volunteers putting in the time to keep us flying! ❤️

Planning time at Wellington Wairarapa Gliding Club! ✈️

Just a bunch of us around the table, we are mapping out the annual inspection schedule to ensure the entire fleet is airworthy, safe, and ready for the skies.

How do the rules work?

In New Zealand, gliding is regulated under NZ Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Rules Part 104 and Part 149.
The CAA delegates authority to Gliding New Zealand (GNZ) to manage our operations.
Under the GNZ Manual of Approved Procedures, every single glider must pass a comprehensive "Annual Review of Airworthiness" inspection.

We go over the airframe, check manufacturer lifed items, and log everything in the Tech Log before the aircraft can be released to service.

Big thanks to everyone volunteering their time to keep us flying safely under NZ standards! 🛠️📖
