Saturday Draw - 100th Trust House Wairarapa Open ⛳️

Fantastic to see such a strong field this year for the 100th Trust House Wairarapa Open, with players from all over the country joining us to celebrate including a number of past members.

The Men’s Senior Division is looking extremely competitive, with 13 players on plus handicaps. We’re fortunate to have past champions Bruce Middlemiss, Perry Hayman, Jeff Tuoro, Jonno Cane, Kerry Mountcastle (pro), Dean Gray, Sam Forrester, and defending champion Phil Tuoro in the field, alongside a host of other contenders capable of taking out this year’s title.

It’s awesome to have Kerry Mountcastle joining us this weekend. While he’s not eligible to win the Wairarapa Open, we’re stoked to have him join the field and playing alongside three junior golfers.

The Women’s Division, playing for the Hopkirk/Rowntree Trophy, features a high-class field led by Elise Barber (+2.7) , while the Intermediate Division is set to be as competitive as ever with a host of chances.

Unfortunately, as previosly mentioned, Bob Charles won’t be joining the field on Saturday afternoon due to injury, but he will still be out supporting alongside Murray Macklin.

We’re looking forward to a great weekend of golf and encourage everyone to come out and support the players.

Carrying on our look at past Wairarapa Open champions, we move on to six-time winner Bruce Middlemiss , who we’re stoked to have joining us this weekend.

Bruce won his first Wairarapa Open in 1979, with wins following in 1986, 1987, 1994, 1996 (tied with Phil Aickin) and 2001. The fact he won across four decades speaks to the quality and versatility of his game.

He was a regular for Masterton Duncan Cup teams, as well as Wairarapa and Wellington rep teams, through the late 70s, 80s and early 90s before moving on to Rangitikei Golf Club, and now Napier Golf Club. From our understanding, he has claimed seven club championships up there an he no doubt picked up a couple at Rangitikei as well!

Bruce has five Masterton club championships to his name and held the course record for many years with a 64, set back in 1984.

It’s great to celebrate and acknowledge players like Bruce and even better to have him in the field this weekend, joining fellow Hawke’s Bay residents and past winners and members Dean Gray and Jeff Tuoro.

Entries close tonight and this weekends draw will be emailed out to players and posted on Facebook tomorrow.

Continuing our look back at past Wairarapa Open winners, the next name is a fitting one - the club’s patron, Sir Bob Charles, a two-time Wairarapa Open winner.

Sir Bob’s family moved to town in 1948 and, after a rugby injury, he turned his focus to golf. He became a member of the Masterton Golf Club in March 1951 with this first offical hanciap of 11, which didn’t last long with the amount of practice he put in over the following years

He went on to win the Wairarapa Open in 1955 and 1956 as a 19 and 20-year-old, and is one of two major champions to have their name on the honours board , Michael Campbell being the other. Those wins came soon after the first of his four New Zealand Open titles, the first of which he won as an 18-year-old amateur.

His most famous win came at The Open Championship in 1963, cementing his place among the game’s greats. A single Facebook post doesn’t really do justice to everything Sir Bob has achieved, but it’s a great chance to recognise what he’s meant to the game and to our club.

His connection to the Masterton Golf Club remains something we’re really proud of, and as we head towards the 100th Trust House Wairarapa Open, it’s special to have him as part of the story and even better that he’ll be joining us to celebrate.

Speaking of next weekend’s Open, the field is building nicely with entries sitting around 90 players. Entries close on Wednesday so dont miss out.

Watch this space as we continue to highlight more of our past champions in the lead-up to next weekends Open.

As we build towards the 100th Trust Wairarapa Open, we’ll be shining a light on some of our past champions.

No better place to start than with two names firmly part of the tournament and our club’s history -
TH (Bill) Horton and John Hornabrook.

Horton won the very first Wairarapa Open back in 1926, and over the years he and Hornabrook went back and forth trading wins. Hornabrook finished with eight titles - a record that still stands -while Horton claimed six.

Horton still holds the record for the most Masterton Golf Club Championships with 14, with Hornabrook claiming five of his own. Both were New Zealand Amateur champions ,Horton in 1925 and 1928, and Hornabrook in 1935, 1936 and 1938.
Hornabrook also won the New Zealand Open in 1937 and 1939.

They’ve both played a big part in the history of this event and the Masterton Golf Club, and we’re proud to recognise them as we head into this milestone year.

Watch this space as we continue to highlight more of our past champions in the lead-up to the Open on 11–12 April.
Remember entries close on Wednesday 8 April, so don’t miss out.

As mentioned we are very excited to have the clubs patron Sir Bob Charles joining us for the weekend.
On Saturday afternoon, Sir Bob will take to the fairways of course where his love of the game began . Playing at the back of the field alongside Harry Bateman, Murray Macklin and Joel Macklin — this promises to be a truly special afternoon. Members and the public are invited to follow Sir Bob's group and the rest of the field as the weekend unfolds.

On Saturday evening we will host “Fairways & Conversation” in the upstairs lounge where Murray Macklin will facilitate a Q&A session with Sir Bob, which will be a truly memorable night for those lucky enough to attend (See below on how to secure a ticket to this exciting event). Canapés and dessert will be served, catered by Zoe Brownbutter.
Sir Bob will return to the course on Sunday to watch the action of the final round. It is a real honour to have him with us for such a landmark event.

We are also delighted to welcome back yet another of our NZPGA Professionals, Kerry Mountcastle, who joins the field fresh off an impressive stretch of professional golf. While Kerry won't be eligible to win the trophy, it will be fantastic to have him, as a past Wairarapa Open winner, back at Masterton Golf Club and truly exciting for those fortunate enough to be part of the groups playing with him.

Congratulations Kerry 🏆
