‼️ Expression of Interest - Future Outlaws Youth Drag Racing Mentorship Program ‼️
During my time in juniors, I spent a lot of my race weekends in anyone else pit’s besides my own, trying to learn everything I could and get as much time on the startline as possible.
I would post on Facebook or ask around if anyone needed a hand, and once we were all eliminated on the Sunday, mum and dad would leave me to continue happily crewing or helping and find my own way back home from Masterton.
I ended up crewing for some bloody cool cars in all classes and learnt a lot about the art of Drag Racing. Most notably, Barry Plumptons Monte Carlo - I actually posted a BUG CV on Facebook asking to back him up at Nationals. He honestly couldn’t say no 🤣 I also ended up with Andrew Rea and Grease Martin, two very iconic NZ Drag Racers, who pioneered the sport from the beginning.
They eventually gave me a drive in March 2020 at Tokoroa in their Nitro FED - an experience that to this day, I can’t believe happened, and refer back to when times get tough.
What I’m saying is, is that I had confidence to speak to adults as a teenager, I could put myself out there and talk to strangers with no worry. I wasn’t afraid to ask questions.
That isn’t very common for young people. And I don’t want young people to miss out on opportunities to learn and grow within Drag Racing because they don’t know where to start, who to talk to or what to ask.
So today - I am excited to announce the Future Outlaws programme, and I am taking expressions of interest for teenagers between 16-19 who would like to participate.
For its Pilot season, up to 10 pairings will be made, with the opportunity for expansion in the seasons to follow.
Priority will be given to:
1. Teenagers who do not have family currently racing competition cars in Group 1 or 2 and do not race a Junior Dragster
2. Teenagers who do not have family currently racing competition cars in Group 1 or 2 but do race a Junior Dragster
3. Teenagers with family currently racing competition cars in Group 1 or 2.
The purpose of the programme is to bridge the gap, match up a Future Outlaw with a Group 2 racer in their area to learn the art of Drag Racing, and what it takes to run a competition car. The end goal is to foster long term relationships, build knowledge, and keep the interest in our sport alive. Think of it as blind dating but for crewing.
Some level of commitment is required to complete the programme:
- 3 events attended with your paired racer during the 2026/2027 season
- 1 event volunteering at your home track in an area agreed upon between you and your home track during the 2026/2027 season (at the tracks discretion)
You will be expected to stay with your paired racer throughout the race day and learn everything you are able to, from set up, to pack down.
Upon completion of the programme, a certificate and reference will be provided for future job opportunities, and participants who have proven commitment to the programme will be offered a drive in the Burgerfuel HZ Ute in Super Street.
Finer details to be confirmed upon interest.
Caregiver consent is to be given for minors.
Sponsorship is also going to be sought to cover gate entries to the events attended by Future Outlaws, and for their drive in the Burgerfuel Ute. Please get in touch if this is something you are interested in.
