‼️ Expression of Interest - Future Outlaws Youth Drag Racing Mentorship Program ‼️

During my time in juniors, I spent a lot of my race weekends in anyone else pit’s besides my own, trying to learn everything I could and get as much time on the startline as possible.
I would post on Facebook or ask around if anyone needed a hand, and once we were all eliminated on the Sunday, mum and dad would leave me to continue happily crewing or helping and find my own way back home from Masterton.
I ended up crewing for some bloody cool cars in all classes and learnt a lot about the art of Drag Racing. Most notably, Barry Plumptons Monte Carlo - I actually posted a BUG CV on Facebook asking to back him up at Nationals. He honestly couldn’t say no 🤣 I also ended up with Andrew Rea and Grease Martin, two very iconic NZ Drag Racers, who pioneered the sport from the beginning.
They eventually gave me a drive in March 2020 at Tokoroa in their Nitro FED - an experience that to this day, I can’t believe happened, and refer back to when times get tough.
What I’m saying is, is that I had confidence to speak to adults as a teenager, I could put myself out there and talk to strangers with no worry. I wasn’t afraid to ask questions.
That isn’t very common for young people. And I don’t want young people to miss out on opportunities to learn and grow within Drag Racing because they don’t know where to start, who to talk to or what to ask.

So today - I am excited to announce the Future Outlaws programme, and I am taking expressions of interest for teenagers between 16-19 who would like to participate.
For its Pilot season, up to 10 pairings will be made, with the opportunity for expansion in the seasons to follow.

Priority will be given to:
1. Teenagers who do not have family currently racing competition cars in Group 1 or 2 and do not race a Junior Dragster
2. Teenagers who do not have family currently racing competition cars in Group 1 or 2 but do race a Junior Dragster
3. Teenagers with family currently racing competition cars in Group 1 or 2.

The purpose of the programme is to bridge the gap, match up a Future Outlaw with a Group 2 racer in their area to learn the art of Drag Racing, and what it takes to run a competition car. The end goal is to foster long term relationships, build knowledge, and keep the interest in our sport alive. Think of it as blind dating but for crewing.

Some level of commitment is required to complete the programme:
- 3 events attended with your paired racer during the 2026/2027 season
- 1 event volunteering at your home track in an area agreed upon between you and your home track during the 2026/2027 season (at the tracks discretion)

You will be expected to stay with your paired racer throughout the race day and learn everything you are able to, from set up, to pack down.

Upon completion of the programme, a certificate and reference will be provided for future job opportunities, and participants who have proven commitment to the programme will be offered a drive in the Burgerfuel HZ Ute in Super Street.

Finer details to be confirmed upon interest.
Caregiver consent is to be given for minors.

Sponsorship is also going to be sought to cover gate entries to the events attended by Future Outlaws, and for their drive in the Burgerfuel Ute. Please get in touch if this is something you are interested in.

Please contact me via message or email [email protected] to express yours or your child’s interest

I’ve had a few new followers since Winternationals, so thought I’d do a bit of a reintroduction post!

Hi, I’m Cindy, from Wellington (New Zealand) but I live in Hamilton. This makes for an interesting time at Wellington Invasion at Meremere Dragway.

Because of our central location I’m lucky to frequent all the Dragstrip’s in the North Island, I call Meremere home, but Tokoroa is my favourite.

I race the BurgerFuel 1969 Chev Camaro in Super Street and I reckon I get on alright in that. I thank my almost 10 years racing experience (I started in juniors at 15) and my abundance of seat time! The summer before I grenaded the engine, we raced almost every second weekend, with January-February being every weekend. Along with some mentoring and the occasional heads-up on who to “play the game” with from our Team Owner, the Burger Baron - Matt Kingi.

My entire family races alongside me too - my little brother in the Burgerfuel HZ Ute also in Super Street, my mum in her LS 3 turbo RX7 in Super Sedan, and my dad and fiancè who just fix our broken s**t. Poor buggers.
I’m also blessed to have two petrol head stepkids who are just as keen as I am to go racing!
I’m also lucky because my fiance is an IHRA tech inspector, while my dad is an NZDRA inspector, so I’m teched and licenced for both - saving me probably close to hundreds in day affiliation fees each season.

Last season, after blowing up the motor, I discovered I really enjoyed event planning and promotion through building and running my own national series - the True Nationals. It was created after becoming increasingly frustrated at the governing bodies for not giving us a joint series, and after Katie Iti of RDHZD Racing passed away, I decided enough was enough. Life is too short to sit around letting things slide. I also gave running a teams racing event a crack at Tokoroa Street Rodders Inc Amisfield Dragstrip. I have many more ideas in store next season for New Zealand Drag Racing!

This past season my fiance has gotten an amazing opportunity to help the A Civil Motorsport team over in Australia, and I was lucky to tag along and back up Ronnie at the Winternationals. Which is where a lot of my new followers spotted me!

I hope to do more sparkly back-up-girling next season as well. It’s all a part of the show ✨
I grew up doing dancing and cheerleading until I switched to drag racing when I was 15. My coach, Christina, was a huge mentor in my life, and I credit a lot of my confidence to her. She taught me how to present myself to a crowd, how to lead with kindness and fairness, and that the little girls are ALWAYS watching. The glitz and glamour of BUGging brings me back to the dancing days!

My life motto is “how hard can it be” and that has gotten me into a few sticky situations where I have bitten off more than I can chew… but I’ve learned to chew the hell out of it.

Bring on a chilly winter full of planning, meetings, phone calls, and preparing to bring NZ Drag Racing a season like no other 🍾

Wearing a piece of drag racing history, sent by the LEGEND herself Mad Maxine was such an honour 🫶🏻

I’ve been thinking about what I’m going to do with it… As it’s WAY too iconic to be hung away in a closet, gathering dust, only seeing sunlight a couple times a year or so until we build our mancave. So… In loving memory of our little Back Up Girl, Katie, I’ve decided I’m going to frame it - and see if there’s a spot on a wall in the Ford Bar at Meremere Dragway to hang it up on while it isn’t worn! Flossy and the Blue Shirts are my biggest cheerleaders, and my trophies live with my mum, so I think this is a suitable contribution to the collection of artefacts on display in there 🤝

I am still deciding when I’m going to pull this one out next, I’m thinking Dragstalgias in January at Masterton Motorplex International Dragstrip, and Nostalgias in April at Meremere.

I have a few more Mad Maxine numbers to wear out as well at other events, comment below if you’d like to be backed up or who you’d like to see me back up in one! 👇

Facebook is being weird and cropping my pictures funny so picture credits:
