Tuesday 12th May saw 27 players head out on a rather chilly day to play a Stableford competition, incorporating the annual Bessie Fulllerton-Smith competition for the best Stableford round, always played on the second Tuesday in May. There was some good close scoring, with Brian Willis taking out the award with 22 points, which also saw him the winner of the 1st Division, followed by 3 players all on 19 points, their places decided by countback, Allen Collins 2nd, Brian Shaw 3rd and Brian Short 4th. Last year's winner of the Bessie Fullerton-Smith, Jeff Gilbert, came in just one point shy with 21 which saw him take out the 2nd Division from Hain Dickie on 20 and Alan Deighton third, seeing off two others on 16 points by way of countback. The 3rd Division was also a close contest with Jan Cook winning on countback from Louise White in second, both on 18 points, and right behind in third, Barb Crawford on 17.There was also two birdies scored, Brian Short with an excellent one on the 2nd (Par 4) and Allen Collins on the 3rd (Par 3), Allen also taking out the raffle and Murray Richardson the lucky Card. There was also one match played in the Campbell Matchplay, with Brian Short winning over Bryan Hamerton, Brian now through to the final against Steve Whitford.

On Monday 11th May, 6 players from Marton took part in the Wanganui Golf Club's Open Day with some success. Our sole lady representative, Sheena Marshall came second in the Ladies 2nd Division with 16 points, while in the Men's 1st Division Brian Shaw was third on countback with 17 points and Steve Whitford was fifth, also on 17 points via countback. The Men's 2nd Division was won by Alan Deighton on 16 points. Sheena and Steve both also won raffles to round off an enjoyable day.

Palmerston North Open Day
Report: Steve Whitford

Monday 9th March saw 10 players from Marton take part in Palmerston North Golf Club's Open Day in fine weather with the greens running quite fast. Marton certainly made their presence felt when it came to prizegiving which was great to see. Competition of the day was Stableford over two men's and two ladies divisions.
In the Men's 1st Division, Paul Sharland came third on countback with 19 points, while in the Men's 2nd Division Jeff Gilbert was first on 22 points by countback and Steve Whitford was third on 21 points by countback.
A stunning day for the ladies, with June Fallaver winning the Ladies 2nd Division with 25 points on countback from Opalle Weir in second, also on 25, and just one point back in third place was Barb Crawford with 24 points.
Steve Whitford also got nearest the pin in the Men's 2nd Division and managed to score a two, and just to round things off managed to win a meat raffle as did Alan Deighton.

Tuesday 3rd March saw 23 players head out in cool weather conditions with more like a winter than an autumnal feel, to play a Nett Medal competition over the temporary 9 hole course. The fairways and greens were in excellent condition even after the recent weather events and the good scoring through all divisions reflected that. The 1st Division saw Sean McAleese winning with a nett 32, while just one shot back on 33 were Steve Whitford and Brian Shaw, with Steve 2nd on countback. A nett 31 saw Jeff Gilbert a clear winner in the 2nd Division, David Smith second on 34 and Alan Deighton on 37. Meanwhile in the 3rd Division the winner Louise White had the round of the day with a nett 28, from Opalle Weir on 34 and Sharon Pudney 3rd on 35. Louise White carried on with her winning ways, also taking out the raffle and Judy McConachy got the lucky card.

Just a general enquiry, did anyone find a sleeve of Wilson Duo golf balls, yellow, marked with a + on one side and a - on the other, all No: 3. They must have fallen out of my bag somewhere along the way.

Last Saturday Allan Collins, Adrian Penning and myself went to Paraparaumu to watch the NZ PGA. Luckily we took our clubs and wore our club shirts because when we arrived a guy from NZ Golf approached us and asked if we would like to take part in a invitation 6 hole ambrose game during the lunch break.
We all agreed and played on the beautiful Paraparaumu links course and came away with the trophy as you can see in the attached photo. We couldn’t bring the trophy home as it had to go away for engraving but gave us a minature instead.

Tuesday 13th January saw the first round of our new season played in great weather and actually without any wind, which was a bonus β˜€οΈ 🌞
The competition of the day was Stableford with good scoring in all divisions.
The 1st Division saw Steve Whitford winning with 21 points, followed closely by Wayne Pudney on 20 and in third on countback was Ray Morrissey with 18 points.
Both the other divisions were decided on countback, with the 2nd Division taken out by Alan Deighton from Dee Amor in second with both on 20 points and Jeff Gilbert third with 18 and in the 3rd Division Opalle Weir prevailed over June Fallaver, also both on 20 points and Louise White in third place with 18.
πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘ Well done to all!

The match was followed up by a sausage off the BBQ while enjoying the nice weather out on the terrace, thanks to Murray and Jeff for their efforts doing the cooking. 🌭🌭🍞🧈🌭🌭

Before next week Its hope to have the preliminary programme for the year out to everyone, with our normal yearlong competitions starting in earnest from the 3rd of February.

Looking forward to more fine weather next week β˜€οΈ
