🌟 PALS Day 2026 – Empowering Young Leaders Through Physical Activity! 🌟

What an incredible day we had yesterday bringing together 165 student leaders from 15 Healthy Active Learning schools across Counties Manukau for our first ever annual Physical Activity Leaders (PALS) Day! 🙌

A big SHOUTOUT out to Aaron Nash from Meridian Energy Limited for generously sponsoring some delicious snacks helping to keep our student leaders fuelled throughout an awesome day of learning, leadership and movement.

Thank you to Allister Salaivao from Let’s Siva, who did an amazing job of hyping up at the start. And Ngā Mihi to Netball Manurewa for the use of their fantastic facility and support in hosting the event.

There was plenty of energy, enthusiasm and leadership on display from our future leaders, and we can’t wait to share more highlights, photos and stories from the day soon! 🌟

💙💛 Fun-Filled Hauora Inclusion Days 💛💙

What an incredible two days last week, at Bruce Pulman Park, where over 500 students, around 400 teaching staff, teacher aides and supporting caregivers from 30 South Auckland schools and satellite units came together to celebrate movement, connection, and inclusion 🔥

Led through a collaborative partnership between Rosehill Special School, Kauri Flats School, and CLM Community Sport, the Hauora Inclusion Days created opportunities for neurodiverse and neurotypical students to connect, have fun, and build relationships through a wide range of engaging activities.

From Hungerball, football, boccia, balloon badminton, athletics, street racket, basketball, wheelchair rugby league, and the hugely popular CLM inflatable obstacle course sponsored by CoSign, there was something for everyone to enjoy 🙌🏼 Participants also explored creative play experiences with duplo building, a dedicated play space, and a sensory room designed to support relaxation and wellbeing.

Ngā mihi to all the organisations, volunteers, and supporters who helped make these days possible, including Fencibles United AFC, Disability Sport Auckland, Botany Downs Secondary College, Circability, Athletics Auckland, Auckland Basketball Services, Warriors Community Foundation, CLM Community Events, Papakura Rotary, Crime Patrol, Māori Wardens, Ministry of Education, local churches, and many others who shared the vision of creating opportunities where every young person could participate, belong, and thrive.

The smiles, laughter, encouragement, and friendships formed over the two days were a powerful reminder that when we create spaces where everyone is welcome, amazing things happen ‼️

Together, we showed that inclusion isn’t just a word — it’s something we can experience through play, movement, and connection. ❤️

🌿 What happens when tamariki are given a voice in shaping their own play and learning environments?

At Kauri Flats School, student voice and collaboration have been central to an innovative Awakeri Wetlands project recently featured in the Education Gazette.

We are pleased that we have been able to support this mahi through our passionate staff: Healthy Active Learning Advisor, Tracey-Lee Dalton, and Play Lead, Taylor Kamuhemu. Ākonga have been empowered to explore, design, and reimagine how this unique natural environment can be used to enhance learning, physical activity, play, wellbeing, and connection to place.

The project highlights the power of working alongside tamariki to create meaningful spaces that reflect their ideas, support active learning, and strengthen connections with both the environment and community.
From walking audits and design workshops through to creating nature-based play experiences, students have been active participants in shaping spaces that reflect the needs of their school and wider community.

Ngā mihi to Kauri Flats School, the students, whānau, staff and all partners involved in bringing this vision to life. 🌱💚

At Kauri Flats School in South Auckland, wellbeing is not treated as a standalone initiative; it is embedded in the way students learn, move, play and interact with their environment.

When kaiako step out of their usual roles and into a shared space of learning and exploration, something special happens – ideas grow, connections deepen, and a renewed sense of purpose around supporting Hauora.

That’s exactly what unfolded at our most recent Health HALO (Healthy Active Learning Opportunity) Day, where kaiako from across our Healthy Active Learning kura came together for practical, curriculum-connected learning focused on strengthening hauora in their classrooms and kura settings. From whakawhanaungatanga through to reflection, the day created space for connection, collaboration, and building confidence.

Across the day, kaiako explored a range of key Health HALO focus areas, including:
⭐️Using Ata & Oho to support social and emotional learning, helping ākonga develop skills to manage self and relate to others.
⭐️Strengthening understanding of communication and consent, with a focus on everyday respectful interactions and relationships.
⭐️Investigating the influence of the food industry and its impact on tamariki.
⭐️Exploring ways to teach Health through movement, making learning active and engaging.
⭐️Building capability in linking hauora to inquiry, making Health learning visible, intentional, and explicit.

One participant shared what they valued most:
“Enjoyed the discussions with peers. Given a lot of great ideas to incorporate into the classroom to engage the students.”

Ngā mihi nui to everyone involved in bringing this day to life, Paerata School for hosting us, and to the kaiako who showed up ready to learn, connect, and grow.
