The Festive Season 🎄we all enjoy a social drink or two 🍻
I found this helpful & you might too?...

👀 Sometimes a picture is much more helpful than 1000 words 😉 Following on from the chat I had on alcohol last week, this is a snap shot review of the kJ comparison of different drinks compared to the kJ in a slice of bread.

When it comes to food, I don’t encourage focusing on kJ/calories (kcals) as that is far too simplistic when nutrients come into play, but when it comes to alcoholic drinks which are not necessary for your body (in nutrition terms anyway 😉)… considering how many kJ/calories can be helpful as these drinks are really ‘extras’ in your day.

*1 kcal (calorie) is = approx 4kJ (kilojoules)

The key things to remember:

✔️ Alcohol is high in kJ/calories. 1g alcohol = 28kJ/7 kcals, 1g carbs/sugar = 17kJ/4kcals. If you want to make a better choice all round, choose lower alcohol wine/beer/RTDs as well as considering the sugar… or just have less of what you like.

✔️Low carb beers are only fractionally lower in kcals… remember it’s the alcohol more than the carbs that are the issue

✔️If you’re trying to drink less, it’s super important to look at WHY you drink when you do. What’s you relationship with alcohol?

Check out my article on this here: www.healthyfood.com/advice/3-smart-ways-to-trick-yourself-into-drinking-less-alcohol/

✔️Tips to drink less: Having plenty of water before you head out to a party (so you don’t skull your first drunk because your thirty), offer to be the sober driver, try alcohol free bubbles,🥂 or take kombucha, have a 2 drinks max boundary for yourself, if you have a heavy pouring hand with spirits, opt for low sugar RTDs as they will likely mean less alcohol overall.

✔️As a registered health professional, something I have to say…there is no safe amount of alcohol to drink when it comes to your cancer risk. Alcohol as delicious and tasty as it is, is a carcinogen. Less alcohol is better.

✔️The recommendations to reduce your risk are max 10 units per week for women and 15 for men with at least 2 alcohol free days a week.

Do you drink more over the festive season? What’s your drink of choice? Xx
