On Monday, 9 February the Hutt Bowling Club is hosting the Wanganui Bowling Club for the annual Duthie Cup competition between the two clubs (Wellington Bowling Club originally also took part but the club last participated in 2011)
This competition must be among the longest running competitions in New Zealand in any sporting code, being held for the first time on 11 March 1908. It hasn’t missed a year, even during the two World Wars. John Duthie who presented the cup was born in Scotland in 1841. He was President of both the Wanganui and Wellington Bowling Clubs and Patron of the Hutt Bowling Club. He was a prominent businessman in New Plymouth, Wanganui and Wellington regions and was the Wellington Harbour Board Chairman, Mayor of Wellington and Member of Parliament.
The Wanganui Club was established in 1886 and John Duthie was a member of the group working to establish the club. The Hutt Bowling Club was established in 1903 and John Duthie was Patron from its inception until his death in 1916.
A quirk of this competition is that team members should comprise of at least four old Duthie Cup players with the executive making up the balance. Each club has two fours teams and two pairs teams.
It is a magnificent trophy (pictured below) and will be presented to the winner at the end of play. It is normally a 2 day competition but this year will be held over 1 day. Wanganui is the current holder.
We welcome Wanganui to our club and look forward to more close competition and camaraderie.
(NZ Golf Open first competed for in 1907 but only the 105th Open this year (2026)
