Everyone has mental health - but we don’t always talk about it like we all do.

This month, I’m doing the push-up challenge to support the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand and raise awareness about mental health 💪 On the surface, it may look like a fitness goal, but it’s not really about fitness at all. It’s about normalising conversations that many of us still hesitate to have. 💬

If someone pulls a muscle or breaks an arm, we ask what happened without thinking twice. But if someone says they’re feeling anxious, or starts crying, it can suddenly feel awkward. That hesitation doesn’t come from truth; it comes from stigma.

Everyone has mental health. 🧠 All of us have good days and harder days.

Talking about it shouldn’t be reserved for crisis moments; it can live in everyday conversations, in ways that are human, safe, and real.

I wrote a longer reflection about why this challenge matters to me and the work I care about. If you’d like to read it, it’s here: https://www.beingyou.nz/everyone-has-mental-health-lets-talk-about-it

And if nothing else, let this be a small reminder to check in with yourself and the people around you. Conversations, connection, and genuinely listening can make a real difference. 💚

It’s about changing the way we talk about mental health - and recognising that healing happens collectively, one conversation at a time.

Your team feels your state before they hear your words.
Most leadership training focuses on what you do. Far less attention is given to the internal state you bring into the room. Yet your nervous system quietly sets the tone for every conversation, decision, and relationship before you say a word.
When leaders learn to regulate themselves, they don’t just perform better, they create calmer teams, clearer thinking, and cultures where people can genuinely thrive.
I’ve written a new piece on why your nervous system might be your greatest leadership advantage, and how to use it intentionally. 💙

The state you bring into a room silently sets the tone before you say a single word. If leadership is influence, then your nervous system is your most powerful and overlooked leadership tool.

It’s not about becoming someone else. It’s about coming home to yourself. Reconnecting with your strength. Living from the parts of you that already know how to rise. 💛

Being You – Reimagined.

Something’s been gnawing at me for a while…
And over the past few weeks, it finally landed:

I’ve outgrown the way I’ve been explaining what I do.
And maybe… I’ve even been holding myself in someone else’s energy for too long.

So here’s me.
Coach. Trainer. Mental health & wellbeing… (guide? advocate? still working on the word).
Space-holder for rebels, dreamers, high performers, and everyday humans just trying to stay real.

I’m the founder of Being You — a practice grounded in:
✨ Authenticity
✨ Connection
✨ Courage
✨ Simplicity
✨ …and going rogue (not just a little — full rogue).

I’ve always coached as me, but the words I was using online didn’t reflect that.
That’s why I’ve been quiet. And why I’m not anymore.

My work is about helping people come home to themselves.
Because when we live from our own strength, we don’t just shift and grow individually…
We heal the collective.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and this year’s theme is Five Ways, Five Days! Today is to Take Notice - Me Aro Tonu.

Embrace the new week as a fresh start. Begin by setting intentions and reflecting on your recent feelings and stresses. Cultivating mindfulness isn’t easy, but it’s worth the effort. It grants you space to think, breathe, and distance yourself from reactive responses.

Use today to be more present, and observe your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. Use each of the Five Ways to help boost your mental health.

Here are some ideas to help you take notice:

🔵Reflect on the emotions you’re feeling, practice gratitude or have a go at journalling.
🔵Set your goals for the week.
🔵Take a break from technology, or sign out of social media to focus on yourself.
🔵Start and end meetings with a karakia, or mindfulness reflection.
🔵Get outside for your lunch break and notice all around you.
🔵Try yoga or mindful breathing exercises.
🔵Plan to look up at the night sky to observe the marama/moon and the whetū/stars.
🔵Take a mindful hīkoi (walk) after mahi and take notice of the changes in colours or weather.

Let this week be a journey of self-awareness and mindfulness.

𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫!
While no one can avoid having some stress in their life, ideally, you should attempt to avoid chronic stress. A person who suffers from chronic stress will produce more than the normal amount of stress hormones in their body. These excess hormones will affect the brain as well as the memory.

The worst hormone offender is cortisol, which can actually stop the brain from processing and storing a new memory. Cortisol can also keep the brain from retrieving memories that have already been stored. The neurotransmitters in the brain are what the brain cells use to convey information to each other. This is why you temporarily cannot remember much of anything when you are caught up in a stressful situation. You are confused simply because of a hormone overload! It is easy to see how chronic stress can affect your brainpower.
