The Ashley Forest Rallysprint

The Ashley Forest Rallysprint The Ashley Forest Rallysprint is an iconic event held since 1979 on the gravel Mt Grey Road

The first running of the popular Ashley Forest Rally Sprint was held in 1979, which saw Steve Millen in a factory backed 2.3 Vauxhall Chevette win. This meeting was staged over a downhill section before changing the year after to the 1.7 kilometre (55% uphill) course that has challenged competitors and thrilled spectators in the intervening years. The first winner on the current circuit was

the late John Woolf driving a Mazda RX3 with a winning time of 1.10.81. From that time the magic minute has been the challenge for all prospective winners. This finally came in 1988 when Steve Millen's brother Rod driving a four wheel drive Mazda RX7 won in a time of 59.14. The late Kim Austin then became a regular in breaking the magic minute and his 1999 winning run of 56.57 in a 4WD Mitsubishi Starion V8 remained the course record the course record until 2016 when Sloan Cox broke it three times over the weekend. Sloan’s new course record of 55.23 stood for a year when in 2017 he set a new record of 54.96. Also falling in 2017 was Kim Austin’s 1988 Two Wheel Drive record of 1:02.45 by the narrowest of margins to Chris Hey in his Toyota MR2. Check out the final 4 runs from the 2025 Ashley Forest Rallysprint. Featuring Mike Wellington, Neil Webb, and current record holder Hayden Paddon (52:00).

High winds threatened this years racing. Along with complications on the down hill stretch. As the forestry road had been altered in preparation for the trees removal in 2026.

Compared to previous years Hayden Paddon noted he was loosing around one second going down the hill due to the road alteration. Putting a spanner in the works on his career-goal of breaking the 50 second barrier.

Not to mention local favourite Sean Haggarty destroyed his Subaru WRX rally car “Brutus” navigating the mixture of gravel and clay across this section.

Demonstrating how close to the edge these driver push the highly tuned gravel machines and their skill sets.

Hayden Paddon is a 6x champion of the Ashley Forest Rallysprint winning the 2025 edition.

Laying down the winning time of 52.62, just 6 tenths shy of the outright record. The Hyundai I20 AP4++ had the job of chasing down the time of Neil Webb, choosing to go second in the final. He unleashed all 900 plus horsepower to claim victory number six. With the record standing, Hayden Paddon has unfinished business and plans to return next year.

Blenheim's Neil Webb finished second for a third time in his Mitsubishi Mirage. He battled all the way to the final. Going first in the top 2 run off, he laid down a 56.55, setting the time for Hayden to chase down. An outstanding drive to secure second place.

Dunedin driver Mike Wellington put on an impressive drive in the top 4 run off to land his podium spot with a time of 1:00.06. The car had been tuned up by the Paddon Racing Group to attack the hill, and he did enough to take the final step on the podium.

What will happen in the 2026 edition of the Ashley Forest Rallysprint? You have to come back to find out.
