THE MAIN DIVIDE. WHAT A DAY! 🚴🏔️

70 riders turned out to tackle the first Main Divide on our new course. And what a day for it. No wind, perfect conditions, 115km and over 2,000 metres of climbing. The scenery was lovely. The legs probably had other opinions.

Daniel Whitehouse delivered an absolute monster of a ride, taking the overall win in 3 hours 2 minutes, a whopping 15 minutes clear of second place. He also claimed fastest time and King of the Mountain on Porters Pass. Seriously impressive.

Georgia Waghorn made it a clean sweep: first woman home, fastest woman and Queen of the Mountain on Porters Pass. Three awards, one very good day! 👑

And thank you to Pringle Homes, Scotty Brown and Badger Coaching for backing the event, and to every rider who came along and gave the new course a crack.

We’ve learnt plenty about the handicaps this year. With a new course, working out how long everyone would take was always going to involve some educated guesswork. Now we’ve got a race under our belts and real experience to work from next time.

And yes, there WILL be a next time. Same time next year. We’re definitely doing this again! 🙌

A warm, windy night and 30-odd riders getting stuck into the season opener on Old Tai Tapu Road. Canterbury supplied the resistance training free of charge. How thoughtful.

A correction from me: Georgia Waghorn was our third woman home today! I missed her number when putting the results together. Sorry Georgia, you earned that podium spot on a tough course. Congratulations! 👏

Rain in Christchurch, but absolutely gorgeous in North Canterbury! Light winds and near-perfect conditions greeted 120 riders for a tough day in the saddle.

Emily took it on with a brilliant solo breakaway, winning by around a minute and a half. Dave came home second, then just seconds later the chasing peloton came charging through, with Andre taking third and fastest time honours. Bloody good racing!

Hats off to everyone who lined up. The Gorges makes you earn it, wherever you finish. A huge thanks to our volunteers and race partners for making it happen.

Enter the 100 km Gorges Grand Prix on Saturday 10 October 2026. Early bird entry is $35 until 20 September. Limited to only 120 riders.

MAIN DIVIDE UPDATE 📣

We’ve made a few changes to the Pringle Homes Main Divide Classic on Sunday 18 October.

The cost and logistics of getting everyone home from Arthur’s Pass were proving a hurdle, so we’ve redesigned the course.

Here’s the new plan:
🚴 Start in Springfield
⛰️ Approximately 16 km before the Porters Pass climb
➡️ Race past Castle Hill and turn at approximately 63 km
🏁 Return to finish at the top of Porters Pass

Approximately 115 km of proper high-country racing. Simpler logistics. The hills remain thoroughly uncooperative.

It’s still handicap racing, with bunches based on ability. The revised prizes will recognise first over the line, fastest overall time, fastest woman, first junior, plus smaller placing prizes within each starting bunch.

Your entry carries over automatically. If the revised course doesn’t suit, contact me and we’ll refund your entry fee in full. No hard feelings.

🚴 CAN WE PUT 70 RIDERS ON THE GORGES START LINE?

Here is a straightforward update about Canterbury road racing.

We currently have around 20–25 riders entered in each upcoming event:

• Gorges Grand Prix, 10 October
• Main Divide, 18 October
• Waikari Classic, 12 December

Last year these races attracted more than 100 riders.

THE GORGES DECISION

I need to make the final financial and operational commitment to Gorges at 5.00 pm this Friday, 18 September.

To proceed, we need 70 paid entries.

If we do not reach that number, I will cancel Gorges early, before committing further costs. Existing entrants will receive a refund or voucher.

This is not a threat. It is simply the point where intention needs to become entry.

Main Divide and Waikari remain on the calendar and will be assessed separately.

Road racing requires traffic management, safety planning, volunteers, timing, prizes and months of work. I love organising it, but I cannot keep carrying the time, cost and responsibility for events attracting only 40 or 50 riders.

I also accept that I need to make these races exciting, safe and worth entering. If my work has not connected strongly enough, I need to learn and improve.

If you are considering Gorges, enter now. You might be nervous, unsure of your fitness or worried about being dropped. That apprehension is part of racing.

You do not need to feel completely ready. You just need to be willing to have a crack.
