The Leamington Longhorns started this season with a trip to Kio Kio to confront the new kids in the competition.

In the middle of nowhere with the wind blowing hard all day the new boys really brought the fight to the lads in blue and white. With the wind at their backs for the first forty minutes they managed to post a 15-0 score-line by halftime.

The second half started alot better for the Horns as wiley first five Trae Innes scored off a quick tap which caught Kio Kio off guard. Ten minutes later a well constructed set play from a line out saw flanker Jason Rouse dot down over the line.

Young halfback Nathaneal Edwards then brought the scores level at 15-15 when he broke through the country lads defense and dotted down. With time winding down the Longhorns looked to secure victory with a penalty from 40 out but the wind had other ideas.

The last play of the game saw the Longhorns with a 5 metre scrum down Kio Kios end of the field which allowed the lads to build pressure and get Yianni Hilder over the line for a hard fought 20-15 win to start the season.

The bonus point win puts the Longhorns at the top of the table to start the season.

Man of the match went to young fullback Jack Brittenden who displayed great composure at the back.

The boys are at home this week hosting Marist from 1pm so come down and get behind the lads as they look to bury the ghosts of last season and continue their winning ways

Saturday 17 July the Longhorns travelled to Old Boys to play in the bottom 4 final. On a day with torrential rain and howling winds the lads knew it was going to be a tough day. Old boys scored early before the Longhorns answered back with a penalty conversion from Josh Mayo. Old Boys scored again just before half time 10-3. The second half saw the Longhorns continue to work hard and found themselves defending their line for long periods at a time. Unfortunately the score was not to change. Final score 10-3.
That’s the end of the season for the Longhorns we thank all our supporters and sponsors for the support you have shown us all season.

Saturday July 3rd the Longhorns travelled to Suburbs and look to book a home semi final. The boys in blue and white started with a hiss and a roar as young winger Pry Lahui scored on the left wing in the first ten minutes. Suburbs followed up with a penalty kick. Leamington were dominant in the scrum and number 8 Jay Higgins provided a huge candidate for try of the year with a 70 metre run from the back of the scrum to take the score to 10-3. Full back Josh Mayos pleas for tries closer to the posts fell on deaf ears as new winger Declan β€˜Paul Tito’ Knowles scored a great try on the right wing with some silky hands from the front rowers. Halftime 15-3. The Longhorns started the second half strong with another great try on the left wing for Pry Kahui celebrating his 18th birthday with a double. Suburbs dug deep and took a try back before Richie β€˜Houndogg’ Kircher used his wiley veteran knowledge to play to the whistle and score the game sealing try. Final score 27-18 securing the Longhorns a home semi final this Saturday against Suburbs.

Saturday 19th June the Longhorns hosted the University Stags for the first game of the bottom 4 round robin. The men in blue and white had been looking forward to this game since their first round loss to the Stags and the boys turned up. From the first whistle the Longhorns played the type of rugby they have been searching for all year with strong runs and staunch defenders. A try to left wing Pry Kahui after twenty minutes put the horns up 5-0. With ten minutes till halftime open side flanker Jason Rouse dotted down next to the left upright with a conversion from Josh Mayo taking the halftime score to 12-0 in favour of the Horns. With four seasons on one day the second half started in the same way the first finished. Riley Dixon kicked a penalty from in front to take the score to 15-0 with 20 minutes to go. A late try from Uni wasn’t enough to stop the blue and white army taking their first win since round one. Final score 15-5. We would like to thank all our supporters for coming down and cheering the boys on. We will reset this week as we travel to Suburbs next weekend.
