HALF TIME | Set to be a Cracker!

As we head into the break after an exciting first half your Northern Águilas lead the Fruitflies by just 1 goal!

So far an intense game with both sides putting everything on the line one last time; the standout so far has been Club Captain James Cochrane, stepping up in the big game once again shooting 5 from 5 out on the left whilst also collecting 3 steals in the first half.

Half an Hour to go, Vamos Águilas!

GRAND FINAL | It's go time!

After a COVID outbreak brought the season to a halt for a while, your Águilas finished the last two league games with two wins, placing us top of the league.

That all goes out the window now as your Águilas have a chance at reclaiming the league title in 2021.

LEAGUE TABLE | One to go!

After 9 rounds of Wellington League action, your Northern Águilas sit firmly in first place. That said, there is a top of the table clash impending this coming weekend, with much larger ramifications than before.

Having beaten the 5th place Spartanz HC by 18 on the weekend, your Northern Águilas take a 22 goal differential lead into their clash with the Foxton Fruitflies in round 10. This means a draw or a win against the Fruitflies will be enough to see us automatically into the final in two weeks time.

Meanwhile, the 3rd place Vikings will gear up to play the loser of the top of the table clash this weekend with a game against the Spartanz HC, having been solidified in 3rd place.

The Victoria University Turtles will have to settle for the 4th v 5th playoff in a bid to qualify for the 3rd place game in three weeks time after falling to a 4 goal loss against the Fruitflies. They will face the winless Victoria University Wolves this weekend who will be no doubt hopeful to get their first points on the board in the final regular season game of the year before they have the 1st placed team in an Exhibition in two weeks time.

In short, everyone else may have their places solidified, but your Northern Águilas and the Fruitflies have it all to play for this weekend.

¡Vamos los Azules!

FINAL SCORE | Keep on Rolling.

Your Northern Águilas convincingly beat the Spartanz HC yesterday by 18 goals, after carrying a 12 goal lead into the half time break.

Following the growth of the Northern Águilas injury list in recent weeks, your front office made some roster moves eventuating in the debuts of two long-time Águilas fans Peter Ellis and William Silcock. After spending a number of years waiting for this moment the two Christchurch natives made impressive debuts on the left and right wings, quickly adjusting to the fast-paced physical game played by your Nothern Águilas.

On his debut W***y Silcock said "I am ecstatic to have finally been able to take the court in the White and Blue for the Águilas and to have notched my first goal for the club is really just the icing on the cake."

Ellis was unavailable for comment.

The Águilas are picking up steam ahead of the next three weeks, which will decide the Wellington League Champions for 2021.

HALF CENTURY | 50 CAPS - Zac JARVIS

This past weekend, not only did your Northern Águilas celebrate an 8-goal win against Vikings HC, the club also celebrated the 50th senior cap of clubman Zac Jarvis, who becomes just the 10th Águila to take part in 50 competitive games.

Oh yeah, and he scored 10 goals in his 50th game, not a bad day for Zac if you ask us.

Zac is an international junior, who has represented New Zealand on multiple occasions, joined the Águilas part-way through the 2018 season on a one-year contract, only to extend said contract by 4 years to the end of 2022 at the end of the same season.

We got the opportunity to ask Zac some questions about his time at the club:

Q: What was it that made you choose to sign for the Águilas as your first senior club, having returned from New Caledonia with the Youth National Squad?

ZJ: I was approached by the club President, Tim Rayner, who asked what I was doing with my weekends and roped me in to playing handball. It was Tim who signed me up to the Águilas himself as he correctly saw a lot of potential in me, from that day on I haven’t looked back.

Q: You’ve had a taste of success in the form of the 2018 National Championships and have represented before, but what are your personal goals for the next year or two, both here at the club and beyond?

ZJ: I am looking to get back into winning ways with the Wellington League and Club Champs this year. Only trying to improve to ready us for bigger and better things.

We at the Northern Águilas would like to further congratulate Zac on this feat and cannot wait to see what the future holds for him.

FINAL SCORE | It's been a while!

Despite having a largely shortened roster due to an extended Injury List, your Northern Águilas have powered past the third place Vikings to run out 8 goal winners.

The win never looked in doubt as your Águilas played one of our best games this year. With the full roster coming back towards the finals series in three weeks time, we are looking stronger than ever.

Oh yeah, and it's the first time we've beaten the Vikings in 2 years!

LEAGUE TABLE | Best defence in the league?

After 7 Rounds of action in the 2021 Wellington Handball League, Your Northern Águilas sit atop the table by 31 goals, despite having scored one less goal than second placed Foxton Fruitflies HC.

This weekend the Águilas will no doubt be involved in an absolute pearler as they face third place Vikings HC, the only team able to best the Águilas so far this year. In order to remain in first place, the Águilas will need a win as Foxton face off against the winless Victoria University Wolves.

Meanwhile, Spartanz Handball Club Inc. will look for revenge as they face the Victoria University Turtles for the second time this year. In their first encounter no less than 73 goals were scored in a thrilling affair the Turtles won 41-32.

Week 8 will no doubt provide as much, if not more entertainment than the previous 7 weeks as the league heats up, knowing places in the finals series are very much still up for grabs.

Las Águilas no pueden ser derrotadas a los manos de los falsos vikingos.

FINAL SCORE

Your Northern Águilas took down the Victoria University Wolves on the weekend in a dominant display despite being short on numbers. This meant that our very own Head Coach Ingo True made his debut on Sunday night, though not quite able to get his name on the scoresheet.

The Águilas scored well across the court on Sunday, including double digits from Pivot Cameron Ross 🤯
