Stone Store Stand-Up

Stone Store Stand-Up A weekly stand-up-paddleboarding get-together at the beautiful Kerikeri Basin, for some fun on the water and in the Plough and Feather restaurant afterwards.

Every Thursday evening, from 5pm - 6.30pm, stand up paddleboarding enthusiasts from all over the Far North get together at the Kerikeri Basin (by the Stone Store) to hit the water, either for a social cruise, or a fun race for those wanting to get a workout. So if you have a paddleboard why not come along? Free advice from the experts, meet other paddlers. No fees, memberships or charges, it’s pur

ely a social get together. If you don't have a board, then Northland Paddleboarding bring along a trailerload of boards to use - although these MUST be prebooked, by phoning 027 777 1035. After the paddling, it's social time in the Plough and Feather, for drinks and nibbles and more chat. If you haven't paddled before then generally we recommend a lesson first, again contact Northland Paddleboarding to arrange this. Stand up paddleboarding is excellent exercise and very low impact, and it's always good to be on the water. So if running, swimming, cycling etc doesn't float your boat but you want to get into shape, then this is a great way to do it. Don't worry if you don't have great balance, you can start off on easy wide boards that offer great stability. It's not a getting-wet sport unless you want it to be. And if you're competitive then you really should give the racing a try, it's a lot of fun and a full-on aerobic all-body workout. Come on down on a Thursday evening and check it out!

Some fantastic results for our Kororipo Paddlers at the 2023 National SUP Racing Championships!

Ben Godwin and Paul Wright, first and second overall in the Mens challenger series, based on combined results from sprints, technical and distance racing. Paul won the mens sprints outright, Ben won the 8k distance race outright.

Jana Godwin: 2nd overall in the women's challenger series, outright winner in the technical racing. 1st U16 overall.

Lilli-rose Voakes: 3rd overall in the women's challenger series, outright winner in the 4km distance race. 2nd U16 overall.

Taylor Wright: 8th overall in the women's fleet, 1st U14.

Nicholas Louw: 9th overall in the men's fleet, 1st U14, 2nd U16.

These results deserve special credit seeing as none of the youngsters had ever even experienced the extremely difficult wind and water conditions that the championships gave us, let alone been able to train in it. Awesome effort!

The event was a huge amount of fun despite the challenging conditions, and we'll be looking to take an even bigger team down next year. You don't have to be a highly tuned athlete to compete in the event, and there are separate prizes and medals for every age group, including O40s, O50s, O60s and O70s. If you fancy giving it a go, come and join our Thursday night paddling sessions and we'll get you up to speed!

FREE paddleboarding safety workshop, Kerikeri Cruising Club, 6.30pm Monday 20 February. Presented by the NZ SUP National Safety Officer, this is an indoor session, an informal chat tailored to suit the group, which will cover in plenty of detail the essential aspects of SUP safety, equipment choices for the conditions and how to use it, understanding the conditions, how to read them, what you need to know and think about, and what might go wrong and what to do about it. You'll get chance to handle, check out and try on out the various safety equipment options You'll learn loads, and get a whole lot out of it. We should have enough time for chat about other aspects of SUP as well, again, based on what the group is interested in discussing. The session will last a couple of hours.

Please note that there are no refreshments at the venue (the bar is closed!), so please bring your own if you need a drink or snack to keep you going.

Any questions, call Bill on 027 777 1035

Our weekly club session is thriving! Over 20 paddlers on the water last night, with a fairly even split between the cruisers and the racers. And another very enjoyable social session afterwards, enjoying the excellent food and drinks from the Plough and Feather. Loving those warm light evenings!

OK paddlers - so every single person we have spoken to recently has said that they are coming to the Triple Crown this year. But we have had a grand total of 6 entries... Please help us with planning and logistics by not leaving your entries to the very last minute.

Also, please note everyone that the rego/check-in time on Saturday will be 1000-1030; a bit earlier than originally advertised, so as to catch the late morning high tide. If you're coming up from Auckland that morning and want to request a late check-in, that's fine, as long as we know you're definitely coming. The race will be 11ish.
