How long does an inflatable paddleboard last? Having worked with inflatable stand up paddleboards for nearly 20 years, SUP COACH has plenty of insight on this.

Next week we'll continue this topic with a look at what you can do to maximise the longevity of your inflatable.

The two most common misconceptions about how to paddle straight on your stand up paddleboard!

There are two things that people regularly claim are good ways of keeping your paddling straight and needing to change paddling sides less often on your stand up paddleboard. However, neither actually stands up to proper scrutiny or testing. (Yes, they may be valid in terms of the physics and hydrodynamics, but on the water they don't actually create any tangible benefits).

This is definitely a controversial one, as these techniques are often recommended by quite high profile paddlers. And you may well disagree with our take on this! That’s OK. We’re perfectly happy to be proven wrong on this; if we’re missing a trick that does actually make these approaches work beneficially, then we’d love to know it. Let us know your thoughts in the comments. We’d love to hear from you.

Planning on doing a big event some time soon? Maybe an endurance paddle, a big race, or anything that pushes you further and farther than normal training. This is my absolute top tip for how to make it as painless and effective as possible. It makes ALL the difference!

How much should you be bending your bottom arm during the power phase of the SUP stroke? It’s very easy to get this wrong, and instantly transfer the workload from the big, capable muscles that you should be using, to much smaller muscles far less suited for the constant workload required for stand up paddleboarding.

Note, if you're sprinting, or cranking for maximum power like when you're trying to catch a wave while SUP surfing, then the efficiency goal goes out of the window, and every possible bit of power that can be extracted from the body for this extremely short term gain can and should be used. So you will see top paddlers bending their bottom arms, for this reason. Nevertheless, for sustained paddling, particularly in a more recreational context, for non-elite paddlers, bending that bottom arm should be avoided as much as possible, to avoid bringing those small upper arm muscles into play.

I was fortunate enough to get some good footage both from the shore and from an onboard camera during one of the technical races in our recent National Paddleboard Racing Championships. It seemed like an excellent opportunity to combine them with the biometrics from my Garmin watch and a commentary of what I was thinking about at the time, to create an insight into what's actually going on in a race. It's just a short race and there's action a-plenty, including some high comedy (and a ton of luck!) at the end. I hope you enjoy it! Let me know your thoughts in the comments. If you enjoyed the vid I'll try and do some more like this.

Should your top arm be straight or bent when paddling? This is another small body tweak that can make a whole lot of difference in the efficiency and comfort of your paddle stroke.

It might seem a very minor aspect of technique but actually, getting your head orientated correctly in line with your body while paddling can make a whole lot of positive difference to your paddling.

How deep should your paddle blade go into the water when you are stand up paddleboarding? A lot of paddleboarders get this wrong and dramatically reduce the efficiency and effectiveness of their paddleboard stroke.

Nearly 70 students from schools all over Northland came together for the Northland Secondary Schools Association stand up paddleboard championships on Wedneday 1 April on Lake Manuwai. The rain tried to dampen down the proceedings but failed miserably; the racing was fantastic; fast, furious and a whole lot of fun. Each age group and gender enjoyed three races, with everyone on 12'6 inflatable raceboards, and the event finished with the much-anticipated inter-school team relay. Kerikeri High School won the relay and overall trophy, although Springbank fought them every step of the way. Most improved school trophy went to Kamo High School, while Taipa Area school took the best newcomer prize.

Run by Northland Paddleboarding, the annual NSSSA SUP competition has introduced many hundreds of northland youngsters to paddleboard racing over the last 6 years, quite a few of whom have gone on to take it to a much higher level, and have progressed on to winning medals at the NZ SUP National Championships. There's no doubt that some of the stars of this year's NSSSA champs will definitely be coming back for more. Watch this space!
