A big weekend for River, travelling to Wellington to get in the ring for Only The Brave IV tournament 🥊

River faced Harvey Madden in a very well matched bout. Harvey is a very experienced boxer with over 60 bouts under his belt, including NZ titles and international experience.

There was plenty of action across the 3 rounds, with both boys putting on a great fight. Harvey took the judges’ decision in the end, but it was a fantastic experience and challenge for River 💪🏽

A big thank you to Rose and the team in Wellington for having us!

River is competing at Nationals in 6 weeks, lesssgo 💥

A big weekend of boxing for the Kaikoura Boxing Club at the Canterbury Champs 💪🏽

First up was Kobi, who took on Zach Fleming from Victory Boxing. Kobi put on a solid performance from start to finish to claim the win 🥇

Unfortunately, Nishanta’s original opponent pulled out, but a new match was arranged against Jai Montenegro from Burnham Boxing, which meant stepping up a weight division. It was a great challenge, and while it resulted in a loss, it was a valuable opportunity!

Sadly, River’s opponent also withdrew, and despite our best efforts to organise a replacement bout, that match also fell through, leaving River without a bout. It’s disappointing after all the hard work he has put into preparing for the champs, but he’ll continue training hard as we now turn our focus to the New Zealand National Championships 🙌🏽🙌🏽

🥊 NZ Golden Gloves 2026 🥊

The NZ Golden Gloves brings together the best boxers from the North Island and the South Island, and this year River earned his place to represent the South.

Over two days of tough competition, River stepped into the ring twice against quality opposition.

Fight 1 – Jeff Seumanutafa (North Island)

Jeff came into the ring with a very unusual style that was difficult to read, throwing everything at River. It was a tough, hard fought contest, but River stayed composed and came away with the win.

Fight 2 – Sateki Abbott (Victory Boxing)

Sateki was a well conditioned, mentally and physically prepared opponent who came to fight. It was another close, competitive bout, with River taking the decision. Both boys boxed exceptionally well and deserve plenty of credit for the performances they put on.

We’re incredibly proud of River’s efforts and the way he represented both our club and the South Island. Thank you to Lance Sutherland for all your help.

A huge thank you to everyone who made the tournament possible – the judges, referees, doctor, timekeepers, volunteers, and to Woolston Boxing Club for hosting such a well run event.

Finally, a special thank you to the Canterbury Boxing Association. The support and opportunities they provide are invaluable. Boxing in the South Island would be much tougher without everything they do behind the scenes.

Congratulations, River! A fantastic achievement and a weekend to be proud of 👏🏽🥊
