SPYGLASS 40 Mountain Bike Challenge
"Awesome" "Spectacular" "Exhilarating" "Breathtaking" and "Unique" 5 often overused words, but the SPYGLASS 40 truly fits all of these!
For the Mountain Biker that wants a new and unique challenge and enjoy the stunning beauty of the Kaikoura Coast and Mountains this is a MUST Do! the full event is twice around a 20km course, climbing a total of over 1400m, 80% on farm track and 20% off road. the course is all across private land and CANNOT be accessed at any other time of the year!
Your challenge, whether as an individual or as a team, starts at the Okarahia (off SH1 South of Oaro) and climbs through views across steep farm land and back across the Kaikoura Ranges before arriving at Spyglass Point affording unparalleled views towards the Kaikoura Peninsula and looking South.
This challenge will "Take your breath away and leave you breathless!"
SPYGLASS 40 has been developed and promoted jointly by Kaikoura Lions Club and Sport Tasman. rights to run this annual event have been secure for a minimum of 5 years - Make sure you are part of the inaugural event on 1st April 2017!
We wanted to run this event in 2016..... but our course developers wanted to keep it to themselves for just a bit longer!
As well as being part of an outstanding event this is also an opportunity to further develop Mountain Biking in the Kaikoura region! .... Net proceeds from running the event will go in part to developing new cycle tracks around Kaikoura and to supporting Youth sport development. What Kaikoura has to offer at sea is well known, but come and experience the gems we have to offer on land.... better still, make a weekend of it and be sure you secure a ticket to the evening prize giving and dinner after the event (details to be available in early 2017)
Event will be open to teams of 3 or more, youths aged 15 +, Veterans and an open class. there will also be a 20km short course event. Event booking will launch in January 2017.
