Busy Weekend of Champion of Champions Bowls! ☀️

It’s been a big weekend for the Kaikōura Bowling Club with Champion of Champions action taking place across Marlborough.

On Saturday, the Singles were hosted by Picton where LeRoy and Julie proudly represented Kaikōura. Julie had a tough start and was unfortunately knocked out in her first game. LeRoy, however, fought his way through round play to earn himself a spot in the final against Simon Hitchcock (Riverside) for the Singles Champion of Champions title. It was a great battle, with LeRoy leading for much of the match. A couple of costly ends late in the game saw momentum swing, and Simon eventually took the win 21–17. A fantastic effort from LeRoy nonetheless.

Today it was our turn to host the Fours here in Kaikōura, and what a day of bowls it turned out to be. Arguably some of the most exciting matches seen on our green in quite some time.

Our ladies team showed plenty of fight but unfortunately left their run just a little too late and narrowly missed out on a place in the semifinals.

Our men’s team, however, were outstanding throughout the day. The semifinals were absolute battles — Kaikōura vs Renwick on one green, while Havelock and Riverside fought it out on the other. Both games were incredibly tight with no team giving an inch, and both matches went to an extra end.

The final Kaikōura vs Riverside was just as gripping. End after end it remained close, with neither side able to break away. Two extra ends were killed before the third and final extra end saw the Kaikōura boys pick up a four — sealing the win and crowning them 2026 Marlborough Men’s Fours Champion of Champions! 🏆

This result now sees them heading away to Nationals, which is an awesome achievement for the team and the club.

After the last event (the 7s) was called off early due to torrential rain, it was great to see bowls played in beautiful conditions. Although the morning started off with a bit of fog, it soon lifted and the sun came out, making for a perfect day on the green.

A huge congratulations to everyone who played and thank you to all who came down to support and help make the day such a success. 👏

📣𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘! 𝗠𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗯 𝟳’𝘀

It was made known to us today that the match committee has confirmed its decision following the weather-affected weekend. With the competition 74% completed, the points at the end of play will stand.

A massive thank you to everyone who helped make the Marlborough Men’s Interclub 7’s happen — especially with the weather making it a seriously challenging weekend 🌧️ Big shout out to Takahanga for backing the hosting duties alongside us, and to all the bowlers who fronted up and pushed through the conditions to get as many games played as possible.

It was also awesome to be part of what’s been the biggest turnout for Men’s Interclub 7’s in decades — a massive win for bowls across the region 👏

Manawatu Shield Update 🌧️

One of those days… constant rain and flooding meant all games were eventually cancelled. The Kaikōura green became unplayable, and while Takahanga’s green was holding up okay, once their round finished, their games were also called off too. Tough conditions all round.

Losses to Awatere and Riverside

He had an absolute cracker against Riverside’s Jordy Hart — a real battle of the giants. One of those games where every bowl matters, including a gap that was apparently just big enough for a bowl to sneak through… and Josh nailed it 😅 Dropped it on the last end, but bounced back big time with a 20–1 win straight after and carried that momentum through the rest of the day.

The fours have been super impressive — but there’s a bit of uncertainty around their game vs Riverside. It was called off early because of the weather, so we’re waiting to hear whether that result stands or if it’ll need to be played again as a rematch.

With the flooding, the rest of the games will now be rescheduled and played at a later date. Solid effort across all teams in tough conditions and a good day’s work done before the weather shut things down.

Our teams finished up yesterday fairly comfortably with getting 8/10 wins across all 3 teams. The fours finished up last, last night calling it at 6:30 with the final win of the day.

The fours started the day with a draw, and Josh and our pairs with a win. A good start to a good day!

Manawatu Shield (aka “The 7’s”) – Bowls Weekend in Kaikōura 🎯🌧️

It’s Manawatu Shield weekend and it’s all happening right here in town!
Kaikōura is hosting the fours while Takahanga has the pairs and singles.

Bit of a soggy start for the Kaikōura green after another 100ml of rain overnight 😅 — late start today, late finish tonight, and it’ll be an early one tomorrow as the crew works hard to get things back on schedule. Legends 👏

As for the bowls… our Kaikōura crews are flying so far:

🔥 Joshy (singles) – 2 from 2
Wins over Whitehead Park and Renwick

🔥 Pairs – Mike & LeRoy (no baby yet 🤭!!!) – also 2 from 2
Wins over Havelock and Springlands

💪 Fours – Craig, Greg, George & Barry
Absolute battle in their first finished game – 9 all heading into the last end, with Whitehead Park just sneaking it by 2. Big fight from the lads.

Huge effort across both clubs, great hosting so far, and plenty of bowls still to come. If you’re around town this weekend, pop down and soak up the atmosphere

It was a big weekend on the greens for Kaikōura bowls, with action happening both locally and on the representative stage.

On Saturday the 17th, some of our Kaikōura Club juniors were in action at the Nicholas Cup in Renwick, representing us with Trish, Henry, Craig and Greg taking the green. The team played some solid bowls throughout the day, took a couple of losses along the way, but finished strongly with a big final win — a great way to end the day and plenty to build on.

Over in Nelson, our Kaikōura bowlers were also flying the flag for Marlborough, taking on tough conditions and quality opposition across development and senior grades.

On the green for our town were:
Development Women: Holly Rietveld, Christine Daly, Carla Walford, Monica Ford
Development Men: Gary Arthur, Vince Daly
Senior Women: Ari Boyd
Senior Men: Josh Boyd, LeRoy Waihirere, Phil Guthrie

While everyone put in the hard yards, the development sides absolutely shone, bringing the silverware back to Marlborough.

🏆 Huge shout-out to Holly and the Development Women, who took out the Sale Westrupp Trophy in style — finishing with 9.5 wins and 28 game points, dropping just one game across the whole weekend. An unreal effort.

🏆 The Development Men were just as convincing, locking in the Masonic Trophy after a dominant run of wins.

The Senior Women, that had our Ari, fronted up against some ridiculously elite opposition and still pushed it right to the end — finishing just behind Nelson with 5.5 wins to 6.5. To put that into perspective, they were up against bowlers like:
• Amy McIlroy – 1 international medal, 8 national titles
• Kirsten Edwards – 3 international medals, 10 national titles
• Jo Edwards – 20 international medals, 5 national titles
• Val Smith – 667 games for NZ and 32 national & international medals

That alone makes the Senior Women’s performance one heck of an achievement.

The Senior Men, including Joshy and LeRoy, also put together a strong showing in tricky conditions and were right in the mix all weekend.

👏 📣 And to top it off, big congratulations to Ari Boyd, who has since been selected for the Marlborough Super Sixes squad, heading to Christchurch over Waitangi Weekend. A South Island-wide tournament and a massive achievement — especially coming out of a small town club.

All up, an awesome weekend for bowls and a big reminder of the quality coming out of our Kaikōura clubs. Plenty to be proud of!

🔥 SHE DID IT! The one who HATES singles with a passion🔥

That was the one she needed — and Ari delivered when it mattered most! A big win today for her last game means Ari Boyd is through to post-section at the Summerset National Open. Grit, focus and some bloody good bowls when it counted. We’re so proud of you, Ari! 💪💚

Huge shout-out as well to Josh and Leroy for their top efforts over the last few days. They had a tough pool and a big ask in front of them, but they fronted up and gave it everything. We couldn’t be happier — they’ve absolutely done the club proud. 👏

A big congratulations to all the qualifiers moving through, and especially to our fellow Marlborough bowlers — awesome to see the region so well represented and firing. 👏

The boys will be sticking around tomorrow to cheer Ari on and show their support on behalf of the club. Let’s get around her and keep the momentum rolling! 💥

Ari got her Women’s Singles underway today and hit the ground running, picking up 2 wins from 3 games. Some really good bowls played against quality opposition and she’s put herself in a great spot heading into tomorrow with 3 games to be played. We’re stoked with how she went and super proud to see her out there doing her thing.

In the Men’s Pairs, Joshy and Leroy had a bit of a mixed day but finished on a high with a strong win. The boys know what they need to do now and will be pushing hard tomorrow, chasing the three wins needed to get through. All the support behind you fellas 👊

As always, we’re incredibly proud of how our players represent Kaikōura and the club on the national stage.

Extra awesome to see our Marlborough mates also firing early! In particular Eden, Jenny and Kiri in the women’s draw, and Andre & Jordan, plus Henry & Mark in the men’s, all of whom have had a cracking start with majority wins u der theor belts. Great bowling all round 👏

Our next lot of Summerset Nationals players are underway - we’ve got Joshy Boyd and Leroy Waihirere playing in the mens pairs and Ari Boyd playing in the womens singles. These guys have managed to find themselves in extremely tough pools but we’re sure they’ll do us proud regardless.

Wishing Joshy Boyd the best of luck for the Summerset National Open Men's Singles over the next few days.

He kicked off today and managed 2/3 wins for day one. He needs 4+ out of 6 games to get through to post sections. He’s in section 15 of the comp and finished the day sitting 8th out of 20.

Tomorrow he’s up against his Riverside mate, Craig Macdonell who is currently sitting in the place above him on the ladder. Knowing these two players she will be one heck of a game to hit the day off.
