Play Off For 5th Place

Middleton Grange were our opponents for the last day of Linwood, which would decide 5th/6th place.

After being held up slightly due to the game before us going to penalties, both teams hit the ground running and were producing moments of dominance in the early stages of the first half. We had the rub of the green throughout the first 30 minutes but despite decent pressure and quality shots on goal, the deadlock wasn't broken, so 0-0 at the break.

Starting the second half in a positive manner, similar to yesterday, we played well into the breeze and had a few early chances. Some changes on field to freshen things up had the desired effect and we were playing some great football and maintaining possession. With 3 minutes to go the game was looking more and more likely to head to a penalty shootout however, in the dying minutes, Middleton capitalised on a lapse in defence to score what would end up to be the winning goal.

6th place locked in for 2025. Despite the result today, we were pleased to have only one loss the entire tournament. And now the coach can work on getting his blood pressure back down to where it should be!!!

Thanks to all those that managed to pop down and support the lads this week!

LINWOOD - Wednesday Day 3

Our first opponent in the knock out phase of the tournament was South Otago High School.
In windy conditions we settled into our work early and were rewarded by a Lars Meehan goal mid way through the first half.
1-0 ahead at half time, the message was to go out and dominate the second half early, and man did we do just that!!! Hugh Dermody grabbed the ball almost directly from the restart to score after 19 seconds!!! He backed this up minutes later with his second. Angus Manson scored from a corner to cap off a dominant display by our squad, who all managed to get decent minutes on the field before our last game of the tournament. Final score was 4-0 and this sets up our 5th place game against Middleton Grange at 11:40am today, Thursday.

LINWOOD DAY 2 Report

v Aurora 2-1 win
A mucky tussle with Aurora College this morning with our lads being a bit shell shocked by an intense and vocal opposition.
It remained 0-0 at the break with it being all to play for in the second spell. Will Lankow put us in front from distance but no sooner had we finished celebrating when Aurora broke from their defensive end and scored an equaliser.
5 minutes to go we received a penalty which Lars Meehan coolly slotted away to put us back in front. The last 5 minutes were frenetic, but we kept our heads and finished the game with another win.

v Bayfield 1-1 draw
Bayfield were the opposition for our last pool game this afternoon. A scrappy first half where we couldn't settle into our style of play saw us level at the break. We responded well in the second half with great early pressure, where Hugh Dermody was fouled in the box. The resulting penalty was converted by Hugh and we lifted to take control of the midfield battle for the next fifteen minutes. Bayfield were able to reimpose themselves on the game with some strong play in the attacking third and went as far as hitting the cross bar with five minutes to go. Despite the clock running down, the referee continued the game and awarded a late corner kick to Bayfield, deep into injury time. They threw everyone forward and were rewarded with a mucky tap in goal in the fifth minute of injury time.
Final score was a 1-1 draw which has us currently in first place in our pool. The downside is that the second and third teams play each other tomorrow morning, which could knock us back to second place. A draw for this game would be the best outcome for us!!!

DAY ONE TOURNAMENT WRAP UP

U15 - Dunedin
Two very strong oppositions for our junior team in Dunedin on day one which has them in a very tough pool.
Losses to Christ College and Otago Boys' today hasn't dampened their spirits and they are looking forward to the challenge of their last pool gamer tomorrow against St Bedes.

1ST XI - Linwood (Invercargill)
The morning game against St Kevins, was a tight tussle for the first 10 minutes with play evenly balanced. In the 11th minute Hugh Dermody scored our first after some strong build up play down our right hand side and we took this lead into the half time break.
An early second half goal from Hugh was quickly followed by a penalty, slotted by Lars Meehan, and Hugh picked up his third goal of the match to see out the 4 - 0 win.
Great efforts from all 16 squad players as we move into this afternoon's game against Mt Aspiring.

The afternoon game saw us having to step up the intensity considerably against a physically big and fast Mt Aspiring team. We had our fair share of the play as we matched what Aspiring had to throw at us and it was unfortunate that we conceded from a corner mid way through the first half with the 1-0 scoreline remaining at half time. The half time chat was one of encouragement and trusting our processes which the boys responded to with great effect, Lars M scoring in the 3rd minute of the second half. The heavyweight tussle continued with opportunities at both ends. However, nothing could separate two quality sides on the scoreboard with the game ending 1-1.
Tomorow's opposition teams are Aurora College (11am) and Bayfield (3:30).

Great to have this competition up and running!!!
As a school, we saw a gap in school football, so created this competition to get our young footballers playing games on a frequent basis.
Huge thanks to James Hargest, Verdon and Waiau Area for supporting this competition in its first year.

We are continually looking for ways to increase the amount of meaningful games for our school teams from Years 7-13!!!

In a new competition formed for our Year 7 and 8s, Southland Boys’ High came away with a win against Waiau Area School in their second match of the league.

This follows a close 4-3 victory over Verdon in the opening round.

The development league is a great opportunity for our boys to play quality football in a supportive environment and helps build the strength of schoolboy football.

Next week, the team faces James Hargest in what’s always a tough battle. They’ll be looking to bounce back after a friendly loss a few weeks ago.

Thanks to all involved, especially Waiau for travelling an hour each way to give their squad time on the pitch.
