Today we celebrate 20 years since the Invercargill Velodrome officially opened on 26 May 2006, marking a defining moment for cycling in Southland and New Zealand.
The journey began in the early 2000s, when Southlandโs strong cycling community recognised the need to move beyond the outdoor Kew Bowl and create a world-class indoor facility. Driven by Cycling Southland, the vision became reality with a purpose-built 250m timber track designed by renowned velodrome architect Ralph Schuermann.
Construction began in 2005, with specialist materials imported from Europe, and the facility was completed in just over a year. When it opened on 26 May 2006, it was New Zealandโs first indoor velodrome and a major step forward for track cycling in this country.
Over the past two decades, the Invercargill Velodrome has become the heart of New Zealand track cyclingโhosting national championships, international events, and serving as a training ground for some of our most successful riders. It has played a key role in developing generations of athletes and helping cement Southlandโs reputation as a cycling powerhouse.
From bold beginnings to world-class performances, this venue has delivered 20 years of speed, dedication, and unforgettable moments on the boards.
