This is our final award for the season.

The Panthers Softball Club Smith Family Founders Award honours the spirit in which this Club was built—reflecting the dedication, and passion, of the Smith Family who founded the Club in 1945, and all those who have carried that legacy forward over the past 80 years.

This award recognises a volunteer who gives their time not for recognition, but for the good of the Club. Someone who consistently says “yes,” who shows up, steps in, and goes out of their way to support others. Because without our volunteers, we wouldn’t be here today.

This year’s recipient truly embodies those values.

Over the past couple of seasons, they have given a large amount of time and energy to the wider Club. They have shared their knowledge generously, working with players of all ages and helping to grow not just individuals, but the overall ability within our Club.
They have led and delivered training sessions both in season and in the offseason—sessions that have not only developed players but have supported and upskilled our coaches with new and different ideas. These sessions have been planned, covering a wide range of skills, and the results have been clear to see in the growth and confidence of those who have taken part.

Their impact doesn’t stop there.

They are someone who is deeply respected across the Club. Over time, they have continued to expand their contribution, taking the time to understand how the Club operates.

This season, that commitment has grown further, as they have stepped into a leadership role. In doing so, they have brought fresh ideas, new initiatives, and positive changes—helping to strengthen our Club.

This kind of contribution doesn’t happen overnight. It comes from commitment, and a genuine desire to give back.

This season, we recognise someone gives back to the Club for the greater good of not only themselves but everyone and represents the values of the Club.

This year’s recipient of the Panthers Softball Club Smith Family Founders Award is Braeden Heslip

We would like to share our final award winners with you. First is the Panthers Softball Club Player of the Year.

The Panthers Softball Club Player of the Year award is open to any player across the Club, from both morning and afternoon grades. This award recognises a player who has made a strong contribution to their team and the wider Club, stands out through their attitude and ability, and consistently supports and lifts those around them—especially during the tougher moments in a game.

This season’s winner is someone who has put in the hard work over not just one, but many. They have quietly developed into a leader within their age group, showing patience and maturity by taking every opportunity to learn—particularly while spending time in the higher grades.

They have grown into a highly versatile player, confident across multiple positions on the field, and always willing to do whatever is asked of them without hesitation. Their commitment to the team goes beyond their own performance—they are a strong supporter of their teammates. They have the ability to bring people together and lift the team when it matters most.

Their dedication is clear. Throughout the season, they have been training up to six days a week, consistently putting in the effort to improve their game while also supporting those around them.
They have proudly represented Southland in two teams, carrying not only their own ambitions but also representing our Club with pride through their work ethic and attitude.

What makes this award even more special is that this player was nominated by multiple people from across the Club—a true reflection of their character, their influence, and the connections they’ve built with players at all levels.

This year’s Panthers Softball Club Player of the Year is Cooper Nicol

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of club member John De Wit, who passed away late last week.

John was a loyal member of the club throughout his playing years. He spent many seasons as part of the Panthers B team, where he was known for his commitment, and love of the game. He also gave back to the sport through his involvement as a manager, leading both Panthers and the Southland Men’s team during the 1980s. A versatile player, John played primarily at first base and in the outfield.

In addition to his playing and coaching contributions, John also supported the game as an umpire, showing his dedication to softball both on and off the field.

It was especially meaningful to see John back around the Southland softball diamonds since Christmas 2025. After spending time away from Invercargill, he was able to reconnect with many old friends, sharing stories and once again being part of the community, he cared so much about.

Outside of softball, John was also a sportsman. He played in the forward pack for Blues and was a member of the U20 team in 1977, reflecting his passion for sport and teamwork across codes.

John will be remembered for his contribution to the game, and the connections he made over many years within the softball community.

A time of remembrance for John will be held on Friday, 24 April at 3:00pm at the Northern Tavern.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with John’s friends, and all those who knew him.

ANNOUNCEMENT: JWSX SQUAD 🇳🇿🥎

Following a strong 2025/2026 season, our management team has finalised a group that reflects the depth of talent coming through across the country.

Head Coach Dave Elder says “Upon completion of the 2025/2026 season, Junior White Sox Management have finalised the squad for 2026. The coaching staff have been impressed with the standard of play at age group tournaments this season.

It was important for us to attend these tournaments to assess our current squad members, observe emerging talent, and identify new players coming through.

As part of the JWSX campaign, we will be delivering regional camps throughout the offseason, followed by a national camp. From there, the team will compete in local tournaments across New Zealand, with plans to tour Australia later this year.

Player commitment to regional trainings and individual preparation will be a key focus as we continue to identify those in contention for the important 2027 qualifying series.

For those not selected this year, we encourage you to stay positive and continue developing your game. Strong performances in the 2026/2027 domestic season will be closely monitored, and we remain committed to identifying players we want to learn more about.”

Congratulations to all selected athletes 👏
