Our Story So Far
We have been hunter gatherers since the beginning of time and we here at Downsouth Duck Calls.com have been following that fine tradition for about 25years now. We have enjoyed the thrill of setting up the pond for the season’s opening day and providing roast duck for dinner, so every duck shooting season we pack up the vehicles
, don the camo gear, oil the shot guns and dig out the decoys. Like all hunter gatherers when it comes to duck hunting there is that basic need to outsmart a duck. Yes that’s right, we feel that for some reason a duck is an animal that is to be mastered, conquered and out smarted by using all the latest gadgets such as flying decoys and the latest in camouflage concealment and calls that imitate a pretty available female duck. While some of this is true the real challenge and objective is to outsmart and make my decoy pattern and duck attractants look better than YOURS, yes that’s right I’m really trying to outsmart YOU. Our goal is to try and let the duck know that my area is safer and has more available ducks than yours this is the number one objective. While there are many many choices of duck calls on the market from the $20 plastic fantastic that sounds like a duck that ate fermented corn seed to calls $200 and more, from plastic calls and acrylic calls, polycarbonate calls to custom handmade wooden calls. There is something about a handmade wooden call that just feels right, but is out of the price range a lot of us are willing to spend. We here at Downsouth Duck Calls.Com decided to try and make a duck call that ticks all the boxes that as a duck hunter we are after in a duck call. A call that’s feels right in the hand, A call that has the rich and real tone of a wooden call and can compete with the price of a good acrylic duck call. We are very pleased to say we have nailed it. Our calls are hand turned from New Zealand native timbers and New Zealand Exotic timbers. We use Echo polycarbonate inserts and we hand tune the reed. Our mallard duck calls have excellent range from a loud and raspy top end to a soft rich bottom end providing a massive look at me hail call to an inviting welcome call and the feeding frenzy bottom end chuckle. There is a magic feeling when you have the one of our calls in your hands and you have called in that group of big green head mallards, they put their landing gear down and it’s time to pull the trigger on your faithful shotgun.
