There’s nothing quite like the sound of pipes and drums rolling across the Hororātā Domain.

Around 500 pipers and drummers come together at the Games, competing throughout the day and taking part in the spectacular Massed Bands.

You don’t just hear it. You feel it.

There's so much to see and do at the Hororātā Highland Games, so over the next 9 weeks we're shining a spotlight on some of the incredible competitions you'll experience on the day.

This week, we're featuring the Scottish Hammer Throw.

If you were inspired by New Zealand's Lauren Bruce's Commonwealth Games silver medal in Glasgow, you'll love seeing where the modern hammer throw has its roots. The Scottish Hammer Throw is one of the traditional Highland Games events that helped shape the sport we know today.

In a rural community, volunteering isn't just something people do — it's how things get done.

The Hororātā Highland Games is no different. Every year, Clan Hororātā volunteers help bring the Games to life — from setting up and packing down, to welcoming visitors, supporting competitions, serving food, selling tickets and everything in between.

Their time, skills and enthusiasm help create an event that showcases the very best of our community to thousands of visitors.

This National Volunteer Week, we thank all our past and present Clan Hororātā volunteers for being part of the team.

And if you'd like to join Clan Hororātā and help make the 2026 Hororātā Highland Games happen, we'd love to hear from you.

Big jobs, small jobs and everything in between — they all matter.

Join the clan. Be part of something special. Link in comments. 7th November
