In a rural community, volunteering isn't just something people do — it's how things get done.

The Hororātā Highland Games is no different. Every year, Clan Hororātā volunteers help bring the Games to life — from setting up and packing down, to welcoming visitors, supporting competitions, serving food, selling tickets and everything in between.

Their time, skills and enthusiasm help create an event that showcases the very best of our community to thousands of visitors.

This National Volunteer Week, we thank all our past and present Clan Hororātā volunteers for being part of the team.

What is Highland Dance? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Highland dance is a style of competitive dancing developed in the Scottish Highlands in the 19th and 20th centuries, in the context of competitions at public events such as the Highland games. It was created from the Gaelic folk dance repertoire, but formalized with the conventions of ballet, and has been subject to influences from outside the Highlands.
Highland dancing is often performed with the accompaniment of Highland bagpipe music and dancers wear specialized shoes called ghillies. It is now seen at nearly every modern-day Highland Games event including Hororata Highland Games where kilts of competitors fly and leap throughout the day.
