West Coast Badminton Interclub 11/06/26
The second round of West Coast Badminton Interclub concluded on Thursday. South Westland came away with the win and the Bennington Cup, followed by the Hoki Feather Thrashers nabbing the Coll Cup and second place. Overall most points and the Seaview Challenge Cup went to South Westland.
In Hokitika, the Hoki Warriors endured a challenging day at the courts, going down 0–12 to a dominant South Westland side. South Westland controlled proceedings from the outset, claiming all men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles matches in straight sets for the most part. Strong performances from combinations including Graham Berry and Sean Zarcillo, Aldrin Anselmo and Jamie Norton, and Savanah Guralaua with Tracey Hardman ensured a clean sweep. Despite some closer contests, particularly in the men’s doubles, the Warriors were unable to convert opportunities into match wins, with pairs including Garth Sollis and Shawn Nolan pushing their opponents but ultimately falling short in tight sets.
In Greymouth, Greymouth also fell short, losing 4–8 to the Hoki Feather Thrashers in a more competitive encounter.
Several matches went the distance, with Kerry Cropp and Kelly Gempton narrowly losing a three-set battle to Scott Matthews and Cody Weaver. Greymouth did secure wins through combinations such as Cropp and Benson Babu, as well as Syrhys Bell and Tara Quaife, who delivered a strong straight-sets victory. However, the Feather Thrashers proved stronger overall, with consistent performances across the board. Notably, Winnie Dowell-de Quadros and Carien Pieterse combined effectively to claim a hard-fought three-set win in women’s doubles.
