Congratulations to the Guardians of Paroa on the fantastic work you’ve put into the new picnic area at Paroa, officially opened last week.
Despite the wet weather, it was wonderful to see such great turnout and enthusiasm on the day — nothing could dampen the spirit! The improvements to this part of the trail are truly impressive and the area is looking absolutely great.
A big thank you to everyone who contributed their time, effort, and passion to make this happen. Your hard work has created something special for the whole community to enjoy.

The new suspension bridge that will provide an alternative route over the Totara River just north of Ross has moved a step closer to construction with the consent lodged last week.
The project was initially expected to have been completed by the end of the season however emergency work to create a stop bank on the southern approach was required. This then also required a redesign of the approach and engineer signoff.
The Council is planning to begin construction immediately following the consent process with the goal of completing the new bridge for the coming season.
A huge thank you to the team at the Council for all this work.

Sharing a few photos of some pretty cool gear spotted out on the trail this summer.
The manual unicycles looked like a serious workout – not for the faint‑hearted! The electric unicycle, on the other hand, was pretty next‑level and almost looked like something from outer space.
Take a close look at the bike stand under the child’s bike too – they pulled up, flicked the stand out, and just sat there chatting away. Simple and clever.
And lastly, the campervan fit‑out is well designed and pretty clever. The rider has set it up so the bikes slide neatly in and out, making loading and unloading easy as. Very clever thinking.
If you’ve got any cool equipment, setups, or adaptations like these, we’d love to see them – share them below 👇

It’s easy to cruise straight along the trail on your bike and miss the hidden wonders right beside you.
We highly recommend slowing down and taking a closer look along the trail edges — you might be rewarded with something truly special.
One standout is the striking blue Entoloma hochstetteri, known to Māori as werewere kōkako. This rare fungus can be spotted just off the trail in several sections. These photos were taken just north of Kumara, right beside the trail 👀🍄
According to legend, the endangered kōkako bird gained its distinctive blue wattles from rubbing against this vibrant mushroom. The werewere kōkako is even featured on New Zealand’s $50 note, highlighting its deep cultural and historical significance.
