Two days ago The British Journal of Sports Medicine published a study showing a strong association between resistance training and longevity.

The study followed 147,374 adults in the US, over a 30 year period, examining the relationship between long-term resistance training and mortality.

They found that participants performing 90-120minutes of resistance training per week had a 13% lower risk of all-cause mortality, compared to those doing none.

Bonus:
19% lower cardiovascular mortality
27% lower neurological disease mortality.

That’s massive.

And interesting to note the different dose-response curves for different outcomes. With resistance training and aerobic activity having such significant impact on neurological disease mortality.

It’s important to note that all observational studies have their short falls. For example the load, intensity, progression, methodology are not distinguished.

That being said, this is an awesome paper that continues to add to the theories and evidence of resistance training impacting longevity.

There’s a lot of claret being thrown around online regarding the link between physical health and mental health. Which is mostly great.

So rather than adding another opinion to the pile, here’s a simple reminder of the science.

Most of us know exercise is good for our mental health.
But we often forget why.

Here’s a few reasons why-

1.Movement helps regulate your stress response, making you more resilient to everyday stressors.

2.Exercise increases chemicals like dopamine and serotonin, which influence mood, motivation, and wellbeing.

3.Regular exercise boosts Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a protein that supports brain function, learning, and mental resilience.

Exercise isn’t a cure-all magic pill,
but it is generally a readily available, evidence-backed tool that we can use for supporting mental wellbeing.

Strange advice from a PT?

But I think it’s important.

Sometimes health isn’t another supplement, bio-hack, training program or deadlift PB.

Sometimes health is a good bit of sunshine, fresh air, movement

and treating the nervous system to a break from constant stimulation.

This is mostly just a reminder to myself.

ā€˜Training should improve your ability to engage with life, not disconnect you from it’.

I’m not sure who said that, but they sound clever.
