Don’t miss alumnus Bella Aarons in a breathtaking double bill with the Barden Party in Napier this weekend!

Bella and the superlatively talented cast of actors and musicians present a bluegrass reimagining of Macbeth and an original retelling of the Greek myth of Heracles. Each piece is a masterclass in stagecraft, an invaluable experience for our students, and anyone who appreciates storytelling and song.

The Barden Party are on their last stop before taking the shows to Edinburgh Fringe. We’re so proud of Bella making her name on the international stage!

Wishing the best of luck to Senior Company member, Poppy McIntosh at the SCGNZ Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival in Wellington this weekend!

Poppy represents Iona College playing the titular role in a series of scenes from Macbeth, opposite seven Lady Macbeths.

She and her classmates will participate in workshops and perform on the St James’s stage, competing with schools from across the country.

We know Poppy will do us proud and bring back valuable skills to inform her role in our own upcoming Shakespeare production.

Spotlight on Senior Company student, Michaela Chamberlain, who is assisting Pia with our youngest classes as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

Michaela has been part of the HaBYT whānau since aged six when she started at The Drama Workshop with Juliet and Jade. Over the past thirteen years she has worked her way through the classes playing a myriad of roles in HaBYT productions as well as taking part in community events such as the Blossom Parade (where she wowed as a raspberry), Lift Off Festival, fundraisers and more.

‘HaBYT has just been amazing for me and my growth. Genuinely the friendships you make through HaBYT are some of the best, to be surrounded by such gorgeous creative people, learn fun things and get to put on a show it’s one of the highlights of my week,’ Michaela says.

Now in her final year, Michaela will soon be off to uni where we have no doubt she will excel in medical science, or teaching, or whatever she puts her mind to.

Celebrating our Ensemble’s success at last weekend’s Little Wonders performances as part of Lift Off! Children’s Festival!

Our tamariki took over the Toitoi auditorium, performing Thomas Bracken’s Not Understood nine times over the afternoon to a cumulative audience of hundreds. It was a fun and challenging learning experience for our Ensemble students.

Games were played between performances and the day finished with individual affirmations and applause for each ākonga. We are grateful to Toitoi for offering us this incredible opportunity, whānau for facilitating and Jandyra for her incredible artistic direction.

Thanks to parent Rachael Stone for providing the snippet of video.
