DAVE KINSELLA ๐๏ธ Weโre very sad to share that our Central Stags ๐งข 6๏ธโฃ5๏ธโฃ - who later represented New Zealand as a Test & ODI umpire - has passed away.
Born in Taranaki, Dave headed to Palmerston North for teacher's college & made his first-class debut for CD in Dec 1961 as a nippy opening bowler. His career tally of 72 wickets from 28 matches at 23.72 would include 3 bags & a best of 6/25 - and there was also a terrific performance against Otago at Whanganuiโs Cooks Gardens in 1965 when he bowled 27.4 overs for 17 maidens & 2/25. He had a young Glenn Turner dropped three times!
Dave also enjoyed a lengthy Inter-District cricket career that, aligning with his teaching career, saw him play in 5 Hawke Cup Challenge Matches & represent Taranaki Cricket Association, Manawatลซ Cricket Association & finally Nelson Cricket along the way.
Dave & wife Shirley (who played cricket for Cricket Whanganui, was president of the Manawatลซ Womenโs Cricket Association & managed the Manawatลซ womenโs team) passed on their passion for cricket to so many people, including daughter Penny who grew up to represent the Central Hinds & Wellington & play Test & ODI cricket for the White Ferns; their son Roger played indoor cricket for New Zealand too.
CDCA would like to extend our deepest condolences to Penny, Roger and family, and everyone in our cricket family who knew Dave.
If you would like to learn more, there is a link in the comments below to a lovely feature interview by JIMMY ELLINGHAM. An obituary will also be published by CDCA in the coming days. The team photos you see below were kindly donated to CDCA by Dave himself, earlier this year. Rest easy 65.
