Hello! Due to a bureaucratic oversight, I won't be providing shuttle services for a while. I hope to get this sorted asap and will be able to shuttle hikers to and fro once more. In the meantime, I'll post more route ideas here and I'll be sure to pick up those I see with their thumbs out 👍

Travers Peak - Foley's Track
Short but sweet/ steep - a great way to access the Libretto tops quickly. The track starts directly across SH7 from Deer Valley camp site, through beech forest and up to tussocky tops. Great views in all directions, Mt Technical dominating the west and Fairie Queene the north. Good travel south along the Libretto Range or slightly more adventurous north to Trovatore.

Mt Garfield
A stunning day and a surprisingly good track up Mt Garfield (above the Hope and Doubtful valleys). The trail is a little indistinct in the lower section, but the forest is pretty open at that point and the creek is a helpful landmark (watermark?). Great travel and camping opportunities once you hit the tops! Happy to share the route for anyone interested.

Fowlers Pass is a good alternative entry/ exit point for those wishing to shave ~40km off the Hanmer/ St Arnaud section....

Fowlers Pass is a good alternative entry/ exit point for those wishing to shave ~40km off the Hanmer/ St Arnaud section. Starting at historic Fowlers Hut (no bunks but good camping), there is scenic and expansive country enroute to the more modern Lake Guyon Hut, which is only ~2km from the TA trail proper and where you're much more likely to find a spare bunk at this time of year.

Alpine Summer
Summer is somewhat subtle in NZ's alpine environments, but there was a nice display above the Boyle River today (Mt Norma). Beech Mistletoe and Alpine Daisies in full bloom and even the Flowering Spaniard was temporarily forgiven (until the next spike). Hopefully you're seeing lots of summer colour throughout the TA!

TA sidetrip - Boyle Flats Hut - Boyle Village via Mephistopheles and Faust
I've mentioned this previously, but I wanted to post again as this detour is such a great way to experience tops travel, while starting and finishing exactly where you would following the trail proper. Both ends have marked tracks up spurs through the forest, giving you access to beautiful views and jewel-like tarns along the tops. You'll summit Mephistopheles along the way and Faust is an optional extra. Allow 5-8 hours to complete the day. TA sidetrip - Mystery Lake
The name alone should pique your curiosity, but the Lake itself is beautiful and a detour to it will only set you back a few kms. The lake is nestled in the gentle but dramatic folds of the Hakatere Conservation Park, which offers sweeping vistas and vast land and sky scapes (as above, so below). Combine the detour with a night at Boundary Creek Hut, an old musterer's hut with all the rustic charm that implies.

TA sidetrip - Tama Lakes
It's nowhere near Hanmer, but approx 10km off the Tongariro Crossing section of the TA (North Island) you'll find the Tama Lakes. Both the lower and upper lakes are stunning and Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe provide volcanic backdrops. You'll also come across Taranaki Falls, somewhat unexpectedly, thundering down an otherwise flattish landscape.

TA sidetrip - Nina Valley and Sylvia Tops
This lovely overnight loop starts a few kms north of Boyle Village on SH7 and takes in grand beech forest, emerald waters and great tops travel with a sprinkling of tarns. Nina Hut and Devil's Den Bivvy are both well-situated and comfortable, and the forest sections have decent tracks (PYO adventure on the tops, but reasonably forgiving terrain). Happy to share route if anyone wants it 😊
