I gave Ben a hand to make his first saddle 20+ years ago, since then he made his wife Jo a saddle and this one is for his son Jake who is living in Canada, a belated surprise 21st present.
Its always nice to see what others are making so it was neat to see Ben and Jo on their way to Canada with the saddle.
Its a working saddle made on a Warren Wright tree [Dean Oliver style] and full credit to Ben its a saddle that any saddle maker would be proud of and whats more its being used on a ranch where horses are used in everyday work.
Jake works as cowboy through the week and rodeos most weekends. How nice it must be to ride in a saddle made by your dad, Ben is thinking about make another saddle sometime soon so watch this space.

Steve Houston, Will Redwood and Josh Gardner spent time recently teaching horsemanship skills to some new Molesworth recruits.

Josh captured the moments during a break ans sent this photo of 3 Houston Wade saddles and 3 Molesworth stockman saddles hanging out on the yard rails together.

I still remember the words Robyn Yates many years ago saying don't expect to get rich making saddles but you will have a good lifestyle and plenty of proud moments. I think this is one of them

Thanks for the photos Josh

Jack Drake was well known in the East Otago area for his involvement in farming, rugby, rodeos and anything to do with horses including breaking in, saddle making and farrier work.
Jack moved to Australia in the early 1980s with his 2 young children Vicky and Jeff where he continued this line of work until he discovered his true passion was in writing, preforming poetry and comedy leading to 100s of gigs and countless awards, the highlight being awarded “Australian bush poet of the Year”.
Jack also had several books published, mostly about historical Australian characters some of which took several years of research before publication, helped by his wife Stella.
Jack and Stella lived on their farm, Red Gum Ridge, not far from Stanthorpe in Southern Queensland where Jacks wish to die at home was honored by Stella and her daughter Tamara who became his palliative carers till he died.
I was privileged to have several conversations with Jack before he died, he often spoke about how fortunate he was to be able to live his life following his passions and dreams.
He never took credit for helping others to do this and didn't really see himself as a role model I think he just enjoyed helping others as a matter of course.
Jack was instrumental in helping me get started making saddles in the 1970s, a career that's lasted over 5 decades.
I visited Jack many times in Australia over the last 30 years nearly always involving a road trip to another far off place. Those trips will always be high on the list of my happy memories..
Farewell Jack my best friend and mentor.

Houston Wade Saddles

These saddles are going to be made by Miro Parsonson from now on.
It's nice to see saddle making in NZ in good hands with young people taking it up with enthusiasm and confidence.
Miro started from the ground up working alongside Warren Wright making saddle trees for a number of years before traveling to other countries in the world to learn different aspects of horsemanship. He then settled down in the Bay of Island with his young family making saddle and saddles trees.
After years working with Steve Houston making these saddles it is time to lessen the workload and start taking things easier, if that's possible. I will still be making the Molesworth saddle, Pack saddles and Western saddles from my workshop in Hampden.
I am happy to pass the reins to Miro knowing these increasingly popular saddles will be in good hands in to the future.

Anyone interested in a Houston Wade saddle should get in touch with Miro at [email protected] and there is more information on his website at www.saddletreemaker.com

Jamies Last ride.
Everybody knew this would be Jamie's last ride, but as is typical with high country people it wasn't spoken about, instead focusing on the countryside and the beauty of the surroundings.
A few days later Jamie died peacefully in his sleep and on the 8th of January the small North Canterbury town of Hawarden came alive. The town hall filled and overflowed with people from all over the country who came to pay tribute to the man who had played a part in so many of their lives.
RIP Jamie Brice

Smoko break during the fall muster at Mt White station.
The saddle 2nd from the left is a "form fitter" sometimes known as a "Bear trap saddle" in the USA.
These saddles were popular in the 1960's and 70's as a working saddle on stations. I made this saddle for Derek Deans who had memories of riding in one when he worked on a station

Molesworth Stockman saddle for sale - offers over $3000
I'm selling this saddle on behalf of a good customer who lives in Tolaga bay, near Gisborne.
I made the saddle in 2020 so it has had about a year of good solid station work, and is well broken in.
14" seat to fit slim to average person - 70-80kgs
I won't get technical about the fit. Never had a problem with these saddles on reasonably fit station bred or otherwise working horses.
If you need to know more text or phone myself 0277640002 or Kevin 0274777917
The saddle is in Tolaga bay.

Saddles from Hampden to Alaska

Thane Piscoya from Anchorage checks out her new Houston Wade saddle - these guys have been so great to deal with.
This is is the second saddle I have sent to Alaska this year. Thanks to Steve and his international acclaim and Imogen for her computing, accounting and communicaton skills. And the main ingrediant of course would have to be the old dude who makes the saddles!

This is a pack saddle I made for my good friend Jamie Brice. Jamie is part of a group of hard core high country men whose experience can only be gained from a life time living and working in the high country. If you ever get a chance to go on one of their pack trips consider it a privilege.
I reckon Jamie is busy planning another trip to wear in his new saddle, looking forward to seeing those photos.
