The New Zealand Hockey House is New Zealand's Premier Recreational Ice Hockey Community created BY hockey players For hockey players. The Hockey House is made up of two separate yet connected competitions, the BHL or Backyard Hockey League and the FH
L or Frontyard Hockey League. The BHL was established in 2013 and was the vision of four hearty Canadians who hoped to provide hockey players in New Zealand an authentic, no nonsense brand of Canadian style hockey. The members of this unique hockey experience will enjoy the game the way it was meant to be played which cuts out all the BULL leaving only the BEEF. The backyard delivers competitive games with a professional-like feel and player centred officiating in a fun and social atmosphere. The heart of the BHL resides in its community members. Hockey is a social game that exists and thrives beyond the rink. It is a passion, a legacy and a way of life which transcends nationalities, races and creeds. It is our goal to deliver a hockey experience that pays homage to and closely resembles that of those who have grown up on the ice. The BHL features free agency, trades, waivers, Pro-style uniforms, announcers, in-game music, adjustments to rules in order to encourage gameflow, series based playoffs, an annual draft to decide teams, a black tie annual awards ceremony, AllStar Superskills competition, AllStar Game and of course a 2 foot replica of the world’s greatest trophy as the Grand Prize !!! The Backyard Hockey League is not about skill alone but about passion and comraderie. It is a living, evolving brotherhood in which to share stories, ideas and play the game we hold so dear without prejudice. We would like to welcome you to OUR backyard rink. It is a special place for which memories are made. The backyard is your community, it belongs to ALL of us and we will make it everything we've always wanted it to be. We look forward to looking out that kitchen window and seeing you playing hockey in the backyard! In 2014, the league expanded to 6 teams before expanding to ten teams temporarily in the summer of 2016. The popularity of the community has been overwhelming and in September of 2016 will hold it's annual draft at historic venue, Eden Park in Auckland. The newly formed NZ Hockey House will debut as two leagues and act as the halo for which both leagues operate. The FHL or Frontyard Hockey League was formed as a combined effort from both the BHL and Camorra Hockey School with the intention to develop hockey players within New Zealand and to breed them into players capable of making the jump to the BHL competition in the future.
