Resthills Park (as seen from space!): High Intensity vs. Smooth Commutes 🛰️⚡🚲

Today we’re looking at the contrast between workouts on the grass and steady momentum on the pavement.

⚡ The Shuttle Sprinters: Those bright, dense blocks on the fields show where the hard work happens, on the fields and on the hills—shuttle runs and team drills showing the work being put in to get game-ready.

🚲 The Smooth Rollers: The steady, bright glow on the driveway tells us our cyclists, ♿wheelchair users, pram-pushers, and commuters are using the park as a safe, smooth connection through the neighborhood.

From chasing peak fitness to families and commuters using the driveway as a safe neighbourhood link, Resthills Park is a space that keeps everyone moving forward.

Let us know who is responsible for keeping these tracks so bright! 🏉🥎🚲👇

Resthills Park (as seen from space!): The Straight Lines vs. The Wiggles 🛰️📏🐾

We are diving into our heatmap series, and today’s matchup shows the diversity of how we move. On one hand, we have ultimate precision; on the other, ultimate exploration!

Which are you?

📏 The Perimeter Pro: Shout out to the sports teams, and individuals with the self-discipline to lap the exact boundaries and corners of the sports fields. We see those perfectly straight lines of dedication!

🌿 The Desire Line Trailblazer: Spotted! Our dog walkers and explorers carving "wiggly" shortcuts and diagonal paths through the fields, green spaces and native bush.

Whether you're sticking strictly to the white lines or letting your pup guide you on a backyard safari, you're leaving a fantastic mark on our community hub.

👇 Tell us in the comments: Are you team straight lines or team wiggles?

🙌 A HUGE Thank You to WEL Energy Trust ! 🙌

We want to give a massive shout-out and a heartfelt thank you to the team at WEL Energy Trust. While behind-the-scenes overheads are seldom glamorous, they are the backbone of everything we do. This generous funding helps us:

🏡 Protect our space: Covering building insurance and essential upkeep.
💡 Keep things running: Keeping the lights on and the water hot.
🧼 Stay safe & tidy: Maintaining our fire and alarm systems and keeping the place clean.
🌐 Get connected: Installing internet to keep everyone plugged in.

Because of this support, we can keep our doors open, our space safe, and our focus exactly where it belongs—on our community and user groups.

Thank you, WEL Energy Trust, for investing in us and helping Resthills thrive! 🔌✨

The Secret Life of Resthills Park (as seen from space!) 🛰️🏃‍♀️📊

Ever wondered what Resthills Park looks like through the lens of community data? Check out this public Strava heatmap! This shows Resthills Park is thriving from corner to corner, and we’re sharing a mini-series looking at the "heat signatures" left by different park users. 🌡

But why does this data matter? - It gives the proof we need to build smarter partnerships and design better solutions for the park. We use it to coordinate field use with sports codes like Waikato Rugby League and Waikato Softball Association, advocate for park infrastructure with the Hamilton City Council, and guide native restoration with the Friends of Resthills.

Why does it matter to you? - Because you are voting with your feet 👣(and wheels 🛞, and paws 🐾)! Your tracks create the blueprint we use to help make decisions about where is popular, and identify under used areas.

Community in Motion! 🤝🏃‍♀️

We are looking forward to seeing Mangakōtukutuku College at Resthills Park this Friday. It's great to see local park spaces transform into a hub for school spirit. While the students are out on the course, they aren’t just competing and having fun—they’re training their brains too! 🧠⚡

According to the latest Sport New Zealand Active Bodies, Active Minds report, students involved in physical activity achieve average scores 7.6% higher than their peers do. Plus, exercising in green spaces like Resthills Park reduces stress and boosts motivation more than exercising in indoor spaces!

Whether it's hitting the cross-country trail or connecting over a game of touch rugby, or volleyball between races, we’re proud to help provide a space where rangatahi can thrive physically and mentally.

Good luck to everyone taking part!

Shedding light on the future of Resthills! 💡

We had the team from Probase Engineering onsite to kick off some geotechnical investigations. Before we can install new floodlighting infrastructure with WEL Energy Trust support we need to know exactly what’s happening beneath the surface.

The process is a blend of precision and safety:
- hand auguring to verify there were no underground services.
- drilling down 5 meters to analyse soil conditions.

By inspecting changing soil types and monitoring the local water table, we get a clear picture of how to build a stable foundation for the new lights.

Next up: The geotechnical report! Once we have the data, we’ll have a clear roadmap for PURE Lighting to take over the next steps to light up Resthills and replace some tired field lighting!

🌿 Mother’s Day for Mother Earth 🌿

"Ka ora te whenua, ka ora te tangata."
(When the land is well, the people are well.)

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our inaugural Hamilton City Council Nature in the City - Friends of Resthills gathering today! It was a wonderful way to celebrate Mother’s Day by giving back to the environment and areas of Resthills Park that sustains us.

Here’s a wrap-up of our first session:

👣 The Plan of Attack: We’ve chosen to start our mahi beside the entry gates at John Webb Drive. This is an easily accessible area where we can make a real, visible difference.

🌿 W**d Busting: A huge thanks to Aimee for leading the group in identifying invasive species before we tackled them together. We successfully cleared out Woolly Nightshade and Cherry Privet! Pulling by hand for the smaller ones, and a quick cut and paste for the larger specimens.

🐭 Predator Control: We talked about the new possum traps and saw clear signs that some rat control is working! If you’d like to help monitor any lines, the invitation is open!

🦇 Wildlife Spotting: We learnt about our local long-tailed bats and identified potential roosting sites within the park.

🌱 Knowledge Sharing: We are so lucky to have some very knowledgeable people living nearby. It was great to learn from each other as we identified where native underplanting—like Kawakawa—is needed under the established canopy.

☕ Refuel: A massive thank you to New World Glenview for the drinks and snacks—it was the perfect way to warm up and connect!

What’s Next?
Our next step is setting a planting day! 🌱>🌳 This is a fantastic way for locals and their families to build a sense of placemaking and ownership in and around the park. We'd love to see you there!

Stay in the loop for the date when we can get those native plants in the ground.

We recently shared the One NZ Warriors League in Libraries kuapapa with local primary and intermediate schools in Hamilton, and the response has been incredible.

🔥 100% Interest: Every single Hamilton school we reached out to opened our message to learn more!
📈 Deep Engagement: On average, each school has revisited the idea over 5 times.
⭐ Super Fans: We even have one school that has opened the message 45 times!

It’s clear that the combination of literacy and rugby league is a winning team for tamariki. We are so excited to see this energy carry into the season and can't wait to read the stories that are entered.

Ask your school teachers about how to get involved.

YOU SAID: Parking and traffic on game days are a major headache for neighbours.

WE DID: We are officially supporting and broadcasting Hamilton City Council's campaign. We’re highlighting the multiple entrances to the park and promoting the ParkSmarter rules to ensure our local streets stay clear and safe for everyone.

Don’t Get Caught too narrow when planning your trip to Resthills Park – Spread the Field!

To help ease the squeeze around the main gates on game day, we’re encouraging all teams and fans to use the full width of the park. Parking a street or two over is a great way to avoid the scrum and keep our neighbours happy.

Follow Hamilton City Council rules and check out these easy entry points to Resthills Park—most are just a short warm-up walk away:

- John Webb Drive: A quick 2-minute sprint.
- Reynolds Drive: A steady 5-minute shuttle.
- MacMurdo Avenue: A 7-minute warm up walk (perfect for a pre-game chat).
- Resthills Crescent (2 Entrances): An 8-minute recovery walk to and from the quiet side.
- Sunnyhills Avenue: An 8-minute cool-down to keep the legs moving.

By spreading out where we park, we ensure the streets stay safe for our tamariki and accessible for emergency services. Plus, you’ll find it easier to make a clean break and get home after the final whistle!
