Drama isn’t my thing…
I hear this so often because the mental image of a drama class is often framed as confusing Shakespeare, intense uncomfortable dramatic scenes, or even embarrassing exercises that push people too far out of their comfort zone.
But Abbey Road brings so much more than “just drama” to our classes!
Firstly, we believe that drama is the cornerstone of ALL performing arts because at its core, drama is behaviour, expression and communication…each of which are important in dance, singing and of course acting.
When we look at drama from a one dimensional perspective as “acting” or more popularly “pretending”, we do the craft a serious injustice.
We start our drama students from a very human and intentional understanding of natural behaviour, communication, reaction, listening, mirroring and observation.
Moving away from “acting” and focusing on applying behaviour to scenarios and exchanges is what sets apart the good for the great.
Through fun, laughter, low pressure drills, respect, group support, and creative license, drama becomes an experience of learning and growth, boosting self awareness, confidence, communication skills, the ability to read others, become intentional listeners and responders while meeting new people who broaden your experience.
People of every age and personality type can gain something from drama ;)
