Girls Rugby “Have a Go” Festival Day is happening Tomorrow!! Sunday 3 May at Burnside Rugby Football Club. Thank you to everyone who has already registered, we’re excited to see you there!
This is a fun, girls-only morning designed to give players a great introduction to rugby, build confidence, and help connect girls with teams and other players ahead of the upcoming season.

Date: Sunday 3 May
Time: 10:30am – 12:30pm (approx. 2 hours total)
Venue: Burnside Rugby Football Club
👧 Who it’s for
Open to girls from Rip grade through to Year 8, including brand new players, those wanting to start tackle, build contact confidence, existing tackle players, and Rip girls who just want to play and have fun.
We’ll group girls by age and experience (Year 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8) so everyone feels comfortable and gets the most out of the day.
What to Expect on the Day:
- Skill and contact sessions in rotating zones
- Fun activity and skill stations
- “Have-a-go” opportunities for new players
- Mini games and informal play
- Team formation and connections with local clubs ahead of the Monday night girls-only competition starting 11 May
We’re also very lucky to have five Matatū players attending and helping run the sessions!
Important Notes:
- We haven’t been able to secure a BBQ trailer, so please bring your own snacks and plenty of water. There will be a hydration station with water available.
- Some clubs will have marquees set up with a chill-out zone for players and whānau to relax during breaks we will also have a CRU marquee with some bean bags and music.
Coaches & Parents: If you’re a coach or parent and would like to help out during the skill sessions, we’d really appreciate the extra hands! We’re hoping to have around 200 girls on the day, so any support is welcome. Please send me an email if you're keen to help out at a station and I will send further details through.
Rough Timetable:
- 10:15 – 10:30am – Arrival & Welcome
- 10:30 – 11:30am – Skills Zones & Contact Sessions
- 11:30 – 11:45am – Break + Chill Zone
- 11:45 – 12:15pm – More Skills & Contact Sessions
- 12:15 – 12:30pm – Team Formation, Club Connections & Sign-ups + Spot Prizes
- 12:30pm – Wrap-up & Thank You
