Congratulations to on his selection in the AAFL Team of the Century. Each player was selected by a panel with the best of the best in each club being considered.

Mike Ulukau-Gawn (1997 - 2013)

Gawny represents the tough and fledgling history of the magpies, transitioning from a club that could rarely field 18 players through to making finals for the first time. He was a prodigy, debuting at 13 years old against grown men, two years later he represented Auckland and at 18 was playing for the New Zealand Falcons. At club land Gawny was the rock in the middle of the field that the rest of the squad was built around, and by 2010, his 14th season, he was named best on ground in the Magpies maiden grand final win.

With imposing size and intensity, Gawny could strike fear into most people on the pitch and was wildly protective of the Magpies younger players. However, off the pitch most people know he has a massive heart and wants nothing more than to see success for the club he loves and helped build the foundation for.

Dan McGregor (2003 - present)

You can’t tell the story of the Waitakere Magpies without Dan McGregor.
Most games for the club? McGregor.
Most goals for the club? McGregor
Most swear words spoken at quarter time for the club? Dan mother f’ing McGregor

McGregor’s style of play has changed a lot over the 20+ seasons, starting off as a wrecking ball on a crusade to rack up more fends than minutes played to being a picture of consistency at half forward. His ability to both time his lead and box out defenders means he often gets a lionshare of attention, freeing up his team mates. This consistency elevated him to New Zealand honours and a number of golden boot titles for the club.

As a coach, quarter time speeches matched that consistency and were as direct as they were colourful. Dan became a lightning rod for the emotions of the team, often sparking the team to life when getting into it with opposition players. If they started making statues at Parrs park, the first one may just have a head tapped afro.

David Rattenbury (2005 - 2017)

Squirrel burst onto the scene in 2005 as a skinny little runt that could move like the wind, a tag along of his older, more handsome brothers. Fast forward twenty years and has earned his rightful spot among the Mount Rushmore of Magpie legends.

He first pulled on the NZ guernsey at the 2008 International Cup and was able to feature in the three following tournaments, amassing 30 caps and being named vice captain in 2017. Squirrel joined the Magpies 100 game club, was captain for the 2013 premiership and captain for Auckland for the 2013 & 2016 NPC titles.

Twice AAFL Best and Fairest, he would use his blistering pace to break through packs, leaving defenders clutching at thin air while he would deliver a perfectly weighted kick into the forward line. Occasionally waiving off a lead to have a sneaky shot from 50 meters out.

Shane Leat (2008 - present)

You would struggle to find a person in the AAFL who doesn’t know who Shane Leat is. For a man who has become synonymous with the Magpies, his debut season was modest enough, walking in as a young kid from Kelston Boys. While short in stature, Shane has reached great heights in his 17 years at the club. More than 150 games (many as captain), 3 Premiership Flags and more than a decade with the New Zealand team culminating with captaincy in 2024.

Everyone at the club knows that Shane’s contributions off the pitch are as important to the success of the club as his efforts on it. While many would argue his biggest contribution is getting Hayley involved with the Magpies, the man himself puts his hand up for everything. Uniforms, sponsorships, vice presidency, game day equipment, coaching the women’s team, organising events, social media and the best kick in New Zealand (*says Rob Malone)

Carlos Donnell-Brown (2014 - present)

Carlos arrived at the magpies after being identified through the AFLNZ schools program at Green Bay High School. It didn’t take long for the scrawny young pup to turn into a big dog in the team. With his agility, strength and tenacity Carlos quickly took over the midfield. However, his ability to catch and defend in the air means he has the versatility to play anywhere on the field and be dangerous. The man, aptly named The Weapon, is a terror to play against with the ability to beat you with pace, footwork, a fend or a bone rattling tackle. Throughout his playing career he has also balanced playing high level Rugby and Sevens, often playing all day Saturday then completing a full game with no subbing for the Magpies.

His skills were clear for all to see early and he was scouted to represent his province and country at both junior and senior level. As the standard of play rose, so did Carlos, being a constant feature in best-on-ground lists. After a decade of club experience and New Zealand caps, Carlos has moved into a leadership role where he leads with his actions and throws everything into games.

Congratulations to our preliminary final best on ground

There is a time to start firing in the season, and Carlos has done it in a big way. Having the luxury of moving Carlos to the forward line had been huge for the Magpies, and with his skill set and presence it make for a recipe for success. Carlos was strong in the air throughout the game and help distribute the ball to the right people. Not only that, he was able to snag a couple goals himself.

Thank you to our friends st from providing our best on ground with a $20 Fruzio voucher.
